In 1997 when the Yabby Lake Vineyard was acquired, it was identified that there was a thin strip of soil through the middle of the property which was unsuitable for Burgundian varietals. It was decided that the two small blocks in the section would be best planted to Shiraz, a bold move in 1997 for the Pinot Noir and Chardonnay obsessed Mornington Peninsula. Two ancient Australian clones were selected, BVRC 12 and PT23, both known to be outstanding performers.

Arneis is a rare varietal originating from Piedmonte in northwest Italy which came close to extinction. Crittenden was the first commercially released Arneis made in the southern hemisphere. A backbone of fruit is sourced from good vineyards in the King Valley which is a region endowed with a climate almost identical to Piedmont. An addition from Crittenden's site in Mornington contributes vibrant fruit characters and aromatics.
