From the home of the 2009 Jimmy Watson, just twenty kilometres outside of Canberra. The team at Eden Road operate a single estate vineyard at Murrumbatema, they also collaborate with leading local growers and retain access to the finest harvests in the greater Hilltops region. The aim at Eden Road is to take a highly exacting approach to the winemakers art, subjecting samples of candidate parcels to a scientific analysis, while endeavouring to work the fruit in a way that's gentle and unobtrusive, for the realization of articulate, high country wines.

From vines averaging sixty years of age, a monopole that has gone from strength to strength, ever since the qabal of distinguished Barossa growers resolved to establish their own label. Previous vintages have won numerous awards and medals on the wine show circuits in Australia and overseas, reiterating E&E's legendary status with the large number of international devotees. At every stage of vinification there is uncompromising attention to detail.

In 1934 Oscar Semmler purchased a vineyard and grazing property across the road from where he and his brothers grew up, at the southern end of Lyndoch in the Barossa, alongside the St. Jakobi Lutheran church and school. From a mere thirty two rows of vine, planted on five acres in 1975 by Oscar's son Ken Semmler, the site is blessed by a harvest of the most outstanding quality fruit every year. St Jakobi Shiraz makes a wine that's rich in spice, dark cherry and chocolate characters, offering great tannin structure for longevity in the bottle.

At the tender age of six weeks, Samantha Dutschke was introduced to winemaking when her feet were dipped into a bucket of fermenting Cabernet, the idea being to make footprints on paper for her grandparents in America. Whenever a truly spectacular vintage of Cabernet Sauvignon comes around, a small amount of Dutschke Sami is set aside for a very special limited release.

Oscar Semmler added to the family farm in the 1930s, planting new rootstock to make port wine. His son returned from a tour of duty with the RAAF in the 1970s and re-established the site to yield fruit for good red table wines, it remains the heart of Dutschke vineyards. The most structured and mouthfilling parcels of Shiraz grown to the superlative St Jakobi Block are set aside each year for Oscar Semmler. Oscar is the reserve label for Dutschke, a flagship Barossa Shiraz representing the best of vintage from within the elite appellation of Lyndoch.

Once upon a time, around the end of the nineteenth century, the Semmlers grazed cattle on what are now Dutschke vineyards. They always grew grapes and made their own wine but it wasn't until the 1930s that Oscar Semmler started taking viticulture just a little more seriously. True to the tastes of the time, most of the yield was made into rich ports and fortified styles. Dutschke wines have retained their luscious fruit character, crafted in the timeless old world way, Barossa village Cabernet Shiraz of impeccable balance, elegance and grace.

The philosophy at Dutscke has always been to hand pick small parcels of fruit from the elite St Jakobi Block and make a range of superior, single vineyard wines. Until recently. Since shifting their operations to Gods Hill Road, there have been a few changes. GHR Shiraz is a small batch assemblage of parcels from precious vineyards within a tiny but exquisite Shiraz growing appellation, displaying elegance and controlled power, with a profound sense of place.

Dutschke are the birthplace of Barossa Merlot, originally sown in 1980 by Ken Semmler, cuttings from Block 80 were removed and replanted by the Vine Improvement Society into nascent sites on some of the nation's most prestigious vineyards. The inaugural harvest of 1990 was mixed with Cabernet and Shiraz under the moniker Willowbend. Since then the branding has evolved into Dutschke, the pick of the estate's Merlot is reserved each year for a pure, St Jakobi Vineyard wine.

Durandal was created by Malet Roquefort, proprietors of Grand Cru Château La Gaffeliere, as a modern, accessible rendering of St-Émilion's renowned, solid Merlot/Franc style. A counterpoint to the structured and refined efforts of the Château wines, Durandal is well proportioned with great length of fruit and tannins to suit. A rich cepage of Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon with a quarter of Cabernet Franc, grown to a single, estate owned vineyard on the Cotes de Castillon, vinified by the eminent team of St-Émilion's Grand Cru Château La Gaffeliere.

Parcels of old vine, over seventy years of age and planted to highly favourable clay limestone soils, closely managed to a regimen of rustic agricultural techniques and treated with nothing but fully organic preparations. The Climats of Pommard are at the centre of Cote de Beaune, near the very heart of the greater Burgundy region. Domaine Dugat-Py retain a single parcel of old vines at Pommard, seventy years of age and planted to propitious limestone clay soils which yield one of the most precious harvests in the entire commune. La Levriere is at the very southeast of the ancient commune at Pommard, planted to auspicious limestone clays and managed to holistic, environmentally sustainable land management techniques. Route des Grands Crus represents the ultimate pilgrimmage for all cohorts of great red wine. It passes through four kilometres of Gevrey Chambertin, on either side can be found an archive of the most illustrious historical vineyards. The invaluable Lieux-dits of Grand Cru Mazoyeres Chambertin are at the very beginning of the trek, on the right side of the Route as you enter from the south. There are only a few growers here but Domaine Dugat-Py remains first amongst equals, powerful and silken textured yet refined, only a few hundred bottles are made.

Less than eighty dozen Dugat-Py Mazoyeres Chambertin are made each year, the block of vine is small and the standards of viticulture are without peer. There are a handful of gifted vignerons who work the Dugat-Py circuit of vineyards, a total ten hectares of elite viticulture, dispersed throughout the most superior quarters in Gevrey Chambertin. The remarkable success of Domaine Dugat-Py is a result of the most meticulous attention to detail, an exclusively biodynamic management of vineyards, followed by an uncompromising standard of excellence in the elevage.

There are many appellations within the greater Commune of Gevrey Chambertin, only the most superior are worthy of the moniker Grand Cru. They all converge in the lower southeast of the town, planted to a gently sloped Shangrila of highly felicitious pebbly clay, alluvial soils, strewn with the shell remains of ancient sea life. The terrains here were recognized as far back as the first century BC, the first quarter of Burgundy ever to be established for viticulture. Dugat-Py treat their precious vines to old world farming techniques which have remained unchanged for centuries.

The remarkably favourable mesoclimes of Gevrey Chambertin were known to the Romans over two millennia ago. They established the first vineyards in Burgundy here during the first century BC. The Dugat family can trace a history of local vitculture since the seventeenth century. One of the most eminent names in the Commune, they treat their fruit to a traditional Burgundian regimen of whole bunch ferments in old fashioned open vats, followed by an extended term of age in completely new oak, under the ancient cellars of the nearby Abbaye L'Aumônerie.

The Climat de Les Evocelles is planted to a steep and auspicious, southeast facing slope at the very northwest of Gevrey Chambertin. Petite Chapelle is a next door neighbour of the illustrious Chapelle Chambertin, three hectares of vine planted to a unique mesoclime, a little further down the slope than its eminent siblings. The tiny parcel of Domaine Dugat-Py is managed to old fashioned biodynamic principles of farming, vines are now fifty years of age and yield a limited harvest of the most exquisite Pinot Noir. The wines of Petite Chapelle are known for their suppleness and finesse, silken in texture and enchantingly perfumed, they articulate a remarkable measure of elegance and grace.

Petite Chapelle lies towards the very southern part of Gevrey, a mere hundred metres from the Route des Grands Crus, right next door to the great Climats of Chambertin. Soils are deep and the vines are envigorated by a windy microclime which encourages the excellent ripening of fruit. Dugat-Py have taken an extra measure to match the optimal terroirs with a completely natural discipline in agriculture, fully organic without the addition of artificial fertilzers or pesticide. The land returns the favour with a hundred or so dozen of the most precious wine.

There are less than four hectares of vine at Petite Chapelle but they are fortuitously planted in the finest soils and share a provenance with the most illustrious neighbours. The growers of Dugat-Py treat their land with a reverence that's remarkable even by Burgundian standards. Every vine is husbanded to old world techniques, aimed at creating an idyllic environment for the realization of the most eloquent fruit. A large proportion of the harvest is included in the ferments as whole bunches, infusing the finished wine with the intimate charm of an auspicious site.

Messrs Dugat command the highest respect from their peerage of Burgundian growers and negociants, vignerons amongst the Premier and Grand Crus of Gevrey Chambertin for centuries, they established Domaine Dugat-Py in 1994. The relatively new label has experienced an extraordinary surge in value and prestige, purely as a result of the estate's uncompromising attention to detail and pursuit of excellence. Petite Chapelle is a small parcel of vine, fifty years of age, very near the illustrious Climats of Chambertin itself, only a hundred dozen bottles are made each year.

At some ten hectares in total area, Lavaux St Jacques is one of the largest and most prolific delineations within the greater Commune of Gevrey Chambertin. Planted to the southerly facing aspects of Combe de Lavaux, the quarter is defined by weathered limestone soils which formed part of a drainage canal into the flood plains at the centre of the Commune. A unique mesoclime of sunnier days for developed esters, followed by cooler night breezes for slower ripening, makes muscular, darkly fruited wines of bucolic savouryness and alluvial minerality.

Gevrey Chambertin represents a breathtaking concentration of the world's great vineyards. The Dugat family have been practising viticulture within this very commune since the seventeenth century. Planted halfway up the side of a gentle arc which defines the elite slope of Cote St-Jacques, the individual Lieu-dit of Champeaux yield wines which are uniquely identifiable, as much by the subtle variations of terroir as the influence of the winemaker. Dugat-Py are respected by peers and enthusiasts alike for excellence and eloquence without peer.

From a small parcel of vines over fifty years of age, planted halfway up the propitious slopes of Cote St-Jacques at the very north of Gevrey Chambertin, the east facing site is perfect for Pinot Noir. A quiet achiever of the Commune, Champeaux yields a wine of extraordinary eloquence, which possesses the capacity to retain its refinement and grace as it ages and evolves for many years. Traditionally crafted and matured in an extravagant selection of completely new oak, a little over a hundred dozen Dugat-Py Champeaux are produced each year.

Halfway up the auspicious slopes at the very top of Appellation Gevrey Chambertin, seven hectares of Champeaux are planted to a mix of marly red brown soils and limestone clays. There are a number of growers but the vines of Domaine Dugay-Py are husbanded to perfection through the use of totally organic vitculture. An exacting vinification, followed by a year and a half maturation in the finest new French oak, under the ancient cellars of Abbaye Aumônerie, achieves a Premier Cru of peerless elegance and exquisite grace.

Champeaux is seven hectares at the very northern perimeter of Gevrey Chambertin, planted to an easterly facing slope of limestone clay alluvials which characterize nature's endowment of the most superior Climats de La Bourgogne. The vines of Domaine Dugat-Py are over fifty years of age, they yield an exceptional quality of fruit by virtue of the dedication and skill accumulated through centuries of family viticulture. M Dugat employs a measure of whole bunch inclusion and open ferments to compliment the excellence of terroir at La Champeaux.
