Zinfandel is a particularly challenging variety to manage in the vineyard and winery. Introduced to Cape Mentelle via cuttings from California, vines were planted in 1974 to a ridge of free draining lateritic gravel on an east west orientation to minimise the affects of strong westerly sea breezes. This capricious, low density bush vine site requires fastidious attention to detail. A rich, hedonistically dimensional effort makes all the hard work worthwhile and as such has developed something of a cult following among enthusiasts of bold red wines.

The topical cepage of Cabernet and Merlot enhanced by the inclusion of Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. Cape Mentelle draws inspiration from the tasty red styles of Vallée du Rhône. Fruit is treated to an old world style of vinification, aimed at retaining all the well defined Margaret River fruit characters, along with the more savoury, spicy elements of the vineyard. Growing season 2008 was quickly recognized by industry pundits as a great vintage year, yielding red wines of excellent tannin structure and exquisite length. The archetypal Margaret River Shiraz, endowed with alluring bouquets, a dense palate and ripe, gripping tannins.

An assemblage of Shiraz from the estate Foxcliffe and Kayella vineyards, fashioned into a style which draws inspiration from the timeless classics of la Vallee Rhône. When the Scotchmans Hill team embarked on a pursuit to acquire the finest parcels of Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon in Western Australia, they discovered the magnificent national park of Cape Le Grand. White sandy beaches, crystal clear waters, the most magnificent wildflowers and sunbathing kangaroos were the added bonus in determining the choicest fruit.

From fruit grown exclusively to the prestigious Blewitt Springs Vineyard, previously the source of Shiraz grapes for several icon wines. Located at an altitude of 300 feet, Blewitt Springs is a small site enjoying cooler climes and longer ripening period than the nearby mesoclimes of Willunga and McLaren Vale. These exceptional, low yielding vines at The Springs are eighty to a hundred twenty years of age and at best yield a precious two tonnes per acre. The unique terroir of the site translates into an elegant single vineyard Shiraz with a profound depth of flavour.

Native Goose is sourced from choice McLaren Vale and Willunga vines, between 45 and 120 years of age, planted to a mixture of rich clay soils and red/ brown loams. A portion is sourced from the estate property at Blewitt Springs, the same block used for the iconic Old Vine Reserve. Moderate rainfalls contribute to a harvest of small berries with a yield of about three tonne per acre. The combination of dry grown viticulture, fertile soils and warm weather concentrates the fruit and makes a deeply flavoured Shiraz wine.

From sacred blocks of old, to very old Blewitt Spring vines, mostly Grenache and Shiraz, with a judicious measure Mourverdre. The hand picked parcels are treated to a traditional course of pumpovers and whole bunches, vinified to dry, batches are pressed, rack and returned to a selection of French and American oak hogsheads for an extended eighteen months maturation. Structured, seamless and lingering, an amazingly well rounded palate of ingratiating alcohol warmth, the whole bunch Grenache contributes a sweetly pungent, spicey lift.

The suave Medoc accord of parcels Merlot, Cabernet Sauvigon and Franc, picked off blocks of estate vines a half century of age, grown to the sacred soils of Blewitt Springs and McLaren Flat. Separately vinified before being pressed into a selection of well seasoned French and American oak barrels for twenty two months, assembled to a style that's evocative of the Cru Bourgeois along the left bank of River Garonne. Currants, closets and cassis, ribena richness and savoury cupboard spice, a sound choice to accompany Gigot or garlic roast of gamey lamb.

There are few wines in the pantheon of distinguished regional styles, as generously flavoured, exquisitely balanced and well fleshed, as the full bodied Nebbiolo from the commune of Barolo. The DOCG regulations are very strict, Barolo must be grown on sloped vineyards of a particular terroir and clime, aged a minimum of three years before release. Velvet textured, exquisitely rounded and full of delicious, savoury fruit, Barolo is worthy of the finest gourmandise, call on Canti for a delicate braise of oxtail and marrow, field mushrooms, white truffles and fragrant mountain herb.

The wines of Asti can boast a long history which dates back millenia, to ancient cultures who planted grapes and worshipped the deities of the vine. Canti assemble parcels of Barbera grown to soils which have been yielding harvests of the finest fruit for centuries. Barbera is the Asti of choice for rich foods, braised tomato recipes and traditional Mediterranean fare. Full bodied and intense, defined by deep indigo hues, layered with ripe bramble characters, dark cherries and punnets of savoury fruit, supported by seamless, earthy tannins.

The Campbells of Rutherglen are one of the nation's great winemaking dynasties, internationally recognized for their profound expressions of profoundly Australian Shiraz. They remain custodians to some of the world's last remaining plantings of pre-phyloxera Durif. Two of Rutherglen's defining varietal grapes have been assembled into a finely integrated, complex and engaging wine. The Shiraz component contributes full flavours with spicy berry fruit, Durif adds violet and black cherry characters, solid structure with length and a firm tannin finish.

Intensely rich and concentrated, the Durif of Rutherglen are renowned throughout the world of wine for their varietal purity, eloquence and articulation of place. Crafted from the fruit of ancient quarantined vineyards, vinified on skins over the course of a week, followed by an extended eighteen months in a selection of well seasoned French and American Puncheons. Deep, brooding bouquets of dark, chocolatey plum fruit, its crisp bramble acidity and drying, black olive savouryness over a lengthy course of bold, ubiquitious, gripping tannins.

The original Bobbie Burns site was established by John Campbell in the 1870s, it was the first vineyard in Rutherglen to be replanted with phylloxera resistant stock. Bobbie Burns has since commanded a peerless reputation for delivering an Australian icon wine that's accessible to all, sharing the power and potency of Rutherglen Shiraz. Showing exquisite balance and structure while drinking brilliantly on release, a splendid red wine to enjoy with confidence, whatever its age, alongside warming meat and potato recipes or spiced and marinated grills.

Rutherglen may have the only major plantings of genuine Durif in the world, due to the Phylloxera vine disease. Rutherglen can also lay claim to the oldest productive examples in all of Australia. From within their quarantined vineyards at Rutherglen, Campbell's have been the protagonists of Durif for generations. Unquestionably, Durif at its finest, Campbells release The Barkly only in years when vintage conditions are exceptional.

Cambrian Ridge takes its name from the precious terroirs which sprout some of the world's best Shiraz. A low yielding vineyard which produces harvests of the most intensely flavoured grapes, normally picked early in the vintage, to be vinified and aged until bottling the following January. Heathcote Shiraz enthusiasts take note, this is one to embrace and to bond with.

Calo Rioja is a modern and expressive Tempranillo created by third generation winemaker Javier Murua. In keeping with the new wave of rejuvenating wines sweeping Rioja, Murua avoids the traditional long maturation in old oak to focus on fruit vibrancy and purity of clean varietal characters. The moniker Calo is evocative of the wandering caravan folk who lead the liberated lifestyle, free to indulge in their pursuit of epicurean delights and long, languid libations.
