Kangarilla is a main road in McLaren Vale which leads to a small village of the same name. The vineyards, located at the northern part of the foothills, ripen later than other parts resulting in cooler climate, aromatically spiced, dark berry driven wines with intense palate presence and soft velvety tannins. These wines tend to develop best in French oak, well seasoned American oak also provides great depth. Kangarilla is vinified in a mix of traditional open fermenters with heading board systems and in static open fermenters using gentle cap management techniques. The pressed wine was treated to an extravagant sixteen months maturation in a combination of new and seasoned French and American oaks. Alcohol 14.5%
A redolent Shiraz wine with an abundance of soft tannins that's drinking beautifully. The major component is from the estate's McLaren Flat vineyards. The second instalment is sourced from good sites at Blewitt Springs and Seaview, with a smaller portion of early ripening, low yield fruit originating from a vineyard in the Sellicks sub region which is very close to the sea. They all combine beautifully to form a wine which offers rich aromas of spicy mulberry conserve followed by a smooth mix of black and red berry fruits on the middle and back palate.
Purple with crimson hues. Aromas of sweet spicy black fruits and perfumed plums with subtle glimpses of vanilla. On the palate comes an explosion of black cherries with hints of spice, cinnamon and white pepper. Spicy bold dark plum characters before a creamy velvety textured finish, the result of beautifully integrated fruit and oak tannins, enhanced by lingering notes of chocolates and dark coffee.

Established by Helen and Kevin O'Brien in 1997, Kangarilla Road Vineyard and Winery is based in McLaren Vale South Australia

McLaren Vale is less than an hours drive from the city of Adelaide. The region is defined by some lovely beaches on the western boundary and by low lying hills to the east. McLaren Vale is the best region in Australia to achieve the wine styles that Kangarilla Road does well. The long, dry growing season can often become indian summers, translating into Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay fruit of aromas and flavours and balanced nicely in the reds with soft approachable tannins. In addition, the Kangarilla Road winemaking team are playing around with some new varieties to the district, namely Zinfandel and Viognier and we are very excited about the quality of these wines to date.

 Kangarilla Road

Kangarilla Road is the main road running past the vineyard towards the small village of Kangarilla, the name is a derivation of the Australian Aboriginal language and refers to the abundance of resources locally. The vineyard and winery - which was originally established back in 1975 - offers thirty acres of mature vines that contribute rich fruit characters so typical of McLaren Vale.

Kevin O'Brien is an oenologist with twenty years experience in the wine industry. Helen O'Brien brings flair to Kangarilla Road and has extensive experience in the public relations, promotions and fashion industries. The estate philosophy is really quite simple - to produce wines that the winemaking team themselves can enjoy drinking - wines to savour with food and friends.
