Exceptional Langtons Classification. Hill of Grace is surely one of the most evocative phrases in the world of wine, capturing the heart of red wine lovers everywhere. The vineyard lies opposite a beautiful old Lutheran Church, built of local field stone and named Gnadenberg which translates into Hill of Grace. Cyril Henschke, the fourth generation, made the first single vineyard Hill of Grace wine in 1958. The original vines are now a century and a half of age.

The archetypal Rhonesque fusion of Shiraz and Grenache, Viognier and Mourvedre which dates back to the early pioneering days and reflects the history, religion and culture of Barossa Valley. Henrys Seven is a tribute to Henry Evans who planted the first seven acres of vineyard at Keyneton in 1853. He quickly developed a reputation for producing the best wines in the southern colony. Following Henry's death in 1868, his widow Sarah exercised her principles of temperance by closing the winery and uprooting all the historic vines.

Two thirds Semillon grown to Henschke vineyards on Eden Valley, vinified around a solid backbone of topical Adelaide Hills Sauvignon Blanc from the distinguished Henschke property at Lenswood. Named for Eleanor Hill who married George Crossman Thyer in 1848, the grower who pioneered and developed Henschke's original Eden Valley site. Rich, spicy citrus flavours line the palate, crisp acidity, fine length and exquisite balance, take Eleanor out for the freshest fish or lightly spiced Asian faire.

Excellent Langtons Classification. Cyril was the fourth generation of Henschke winemakers, a visionary who bottled the original Hill Of Grace and formulated one of the world's great Shiraz. Cyril acquired his Eden Valley vineyard in 1966, establishing a large planting of predominantly Riesling and Shiraz at a time when bonuses were being paid by national brands for the popular varietals. Smaller plantings of Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Merlot followed, unfashionable at the time, they have become essential components to the final mix of fruit in Henschke Cyril.

Cyril was the fourth generation of the Henschke family, one of Australia's great winemaking pioneers and the man who in 1958 created the wine that has so captured the heart of red wine drinkers around the world, Hill of Grace. By the mid 1950s Cyril Henschke was well acknowledged as one of the leading pioneers in the Australian wine industry. He recognised the quality of Eden Valley fruit to be superior to that of the popular Barossa.

Heirloom are all about identifying and rejuvenating superior parcels, a patient and painstaking approach to the resurrection of venerable elder plantings, for the realization of profoundly structured, powerful yet elegant wines. Nothing less than the most superior bunches of Eden Vally Shiraz, open fermented and aged in the luxury of the finest French coopered oak, A'Lambra is remarkable for its purity of dark bramble fruit, black velvet textures and refined, graceful tannins.

Heggies have broken much ground with Viognier. A sumptuous wine full of delightful fragrances and exemplary balance between influences of terroir and good varietal fruit. A wine of full flavour and body with excellent length, perfect for accompanying a wide range of foods, especially grills and Asian cuisines.

The Eden Valley's unique contribution to Australian Riesling is monumental. Heggies is a tremendously challenging vineyard, not an easy one to manage for the growers but the completed wine is a most splendid Riesling. Each grape variety has it's own programme of care according to its position in the vineyard. Working with the natural surroundings rather than against them is the driving force. Every factor is taken into consideration, to grow the most perfect fruit and to ultimately capture the flavour and balance of the grapes in their purest essence.

Merlot is planted to rocky outcrops where top soils are thin, resulting in a restricted water holding capacity which encourages lower yields, simply ideal for achieving great intensity of flavour and colour. Working with the challenging natural surroundings, the winemaking team try to capture the flavour and balance of the grapes in their purest essence.

Heggies could be called struggle country, the vines are shy bearing within an extreme environment, for grapes of intense flavour. There are seven different clones, three favoured French Bernard variants make up the majority. Younger plantings are trained to a vertical shoot position, older vines are grown on a two wire framework, ensuring a range of characters from each harvest. Hand picking and gentle whole bunch pressing minimise the extractions and preserves natural fruit aromas. A completely natural, wild yeast ferment is followed by a year's maturation in a high proportion of new French oak barriques.

Chardonnay is the Heggies Vineyard flagship, a wine that truly bears the stamp of an exceptional Eden Valley site. Closely planted Burgundian clones form the backbone of the Heggies style and create an extremely low yielding viticultural environment which requires careful management but rewards with an outstanding quality of fruit. Natural ferments through wild indigenous yeasts, oxidative handling, a judicious malolactic and the finest French oak, all add to the individuality of the wine, an excellent minerality which contributes to the luxurious length, wondrous texture and sublime finesse.

Heggies is an exquisite, though difficult to manage, single vineyard site. The undulating slopes, high in Valley Eden, prevent frosts from settling, such that the unique terroir is encouraged to produce remarkable wines. Fruit is harvested in small, hard won lots, the narrower sections and rows demand to be picked exclusively by hand. A scrupulous sorting is essential, Botrytis affects each bunch of grapes in different ways. The integrity of each parcel is maintained throughout the vinification, ensuring that almost every planting is afforded the opportunity to have a say in the final wine.

Grant Burge is a fifth generation vigneron and one of Australia's most industry respected winemakers. He retains an intimate knowledge of Barossa vineyards and is well positioned to select the pick of Chardonnay from the choicest cool climate sites. A large portion is sourced from Burge's own Summers property in Eden Valley, a further component is picked off vines planted to higher altitudes in Adelaide Hills. Subtle oak treatments play a role, imparting depth and framing the fruit while supporting the fine palate structure.

Crafted to true Methode Traditionelle from fruit grown in the Eden Valley, much of it Grant's own Summers Hill vineyard. From high altitude vineyards that produce the most intensely aromatic Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. A component of 5th Generation is sourced from two of the oldest plantings in Barossa Valley, vines up to a hundred years of age, these wonderful old sites yield a quality of Semillon endowed with exceptional intensity and charm. The supple richness of Semillon's delicate perfume mingles alluringly with the piquancy of Sauvignon Blanc. Elderton have been counting for some years on friends in the Eden Valley to provide fruit for the production of a small batch Cabernet Sauvignon trial. So impressed were they with the beauty and structure of the wines that they acquired a vineyard on the outskirts of Craneford, hand selected for Cabernet Sauvignon, one of the most beautiful sites in the area, where rolling hills and valleys provide much variety in expression, bearing vines up to thirty years of age.

One of the most internationally renowned, new world winemaking estates, Elderton retain a site of mature Shiraz vines planted to rocky, mineral rich soils, near the hamlet of Craneford on the elevated aspects of Valley Eden. It is here that the cooler climes lead to an extended ripening season, developing great complexity in the grapes, encouraging exciting fresh milled pepper characters and achieving the most elegant tannins. Eden Valley is Dandelion's Riesling wonderland, a unique fusion of terroir and vine, season and grower. Wonderland of the Eden Valley is made entirely from vines planted in 1912 which still thrive to this day. Vigneron Colin Kroehn is the custodian of these precious old vines and has tended them for sixty six of his eighty eight years. With a bit of bottle age, Wonderland will evolve exciting toast and custard characters. Nothing short of exquisite as aperitif, superb with seafood, a sensation alongside sultry soufflés.

True enthusiasts of the wonderous plurality in sparkling wine, will be enthused by the Chaffey's emulation of the creamily perfumed, gelid mineral sprays, grown to the sacred slopes along the mighty Mosel. A coterie of small pickings, Kerner, Riesling and Traminer, grown to the eminent Fechner Brothers vineyard at Moculta.
