The Chianti of Poliziano have evolved over the course of generations to represent a salient and essential enlightenment into the wines of Montepulciano. A medium bodied Chianti which expresses the splendour of Sangiovese grown to good vineyards in the Montepulciano Denominazione di Origine Controllata. A wine with excellent balance between bright cherry fruit flavours and refreshing, savoury tannins. Pol Roger's most prestigious Cuvee, only ever made in the finest vintages, a cepage of Grand Cru Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, sourced exclusively from vineyards which were under vine during Churchill's time. The relationship between Churchill and Roger dates back to a luncheon some months after the liberation of Paris, at which was served the sumptuous 1928 vintage. In attendence were Sir Winston and the beautiful Odette Pol-Roger. They struck up an instant rapport and the friendship between their families endures to this day.

The lightness and elegance of Chardonnay from the town of Epernay itself and Cote des Blancs, perfection in pink, the noble House of Pol Roger will never release Vintage Rosé until it is aged at least seven years under the Roger cellars. The very fine and persistent mousse for which Pol Roger is renown, owes much to these deep, dark, damp and cool temperature cellars.

Pol Roger is remembered by local Champenois for his resistance against the German army. The grateful townsfolk continued to re elect Roger as mayor until 1935, when they bestowed the honour upon him for life. It was the Champagne of Winston Churchill, who as everybody knows, was satisfied only by the best. Finished without the traditional liqueur expedition dosage, Extra Brut articulates the perfect balance between the holy trinity of grapes, to speak eloquently of the refined balance between Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Meunier.

Pol Roger et Cie are one of the few remaining Maison du Champagne, still in the hands of the establishing family. To this day, Roger et fils take personal charge in the selection of Cru and the handling of Cuvees. Pol Roger Vintage Brut is one of Champagne's great wines, a cépage of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, splendid upon release after several years of age in own bottle under the estate Chais at Epernay. Soft, with a deep palate and extrordinary perfume, a wine of breeding, complexity and finesse.

Poggiotondo are located on the western hills of Chianti region, between Vinci and Cerreto Guidi. The vines are planted to a mixture of limestone and marine sediment with the presence of white sea shells, which have the effect of imparting elegance and complexity to the wines. Ripe, engaing, perfectly balanced, extended time on skins and ageing in the finest oak delivers a wine which exhibits beautiful black fruit flavours and elegant spice, kept vibrant and nominally dry by the support of underlying acidity.

From parcels of Sangiovese and Merlot grapes grown to the highest altitude vineyards on hills facing the Elsa River Valley just south of Castellina in Chianti, at the very heart of the Chianti Classico zone. Owned and operated by the Mazzei family since 1435, the Fonterutoli estate still preserves its tradition of a tranquil country hamlet with just a few houses, the Church of San Miniato and the villa which replaced a fortified castle from the Middle Ages. Poggio alla Badiola boasts excellent structure, smoothness on the palate and charming personality.

Barolo of the most elite peerage, compiled from the finest Bussia vineyards in Monforte d'Alba, an assemblage of the best parcels Nebbiolo, Lampia and Michet, selectively hand picked off vines planted to limy marl and compact sandy soils on the three great Cru of Colonnello, Cicala and Romirasco. Only ever made from the most spectacular vintage years, treated to a month of warm temperature ferment on skins, followed by several rackings into oak for an extravagant thirty months maturation and several years bottle age under the Aldo Conterno cellars.

Lizio Plozner was a visionary who established his organically managed and environmentally friendly Pinot Grigio vineyards on the foothills of Grave del Friuli in the 1960s. Situated not far from the Alps and close to the region's picturesque morainic hills, the estate has grown to sixty hectares under vine and remains firmly in family hands. The climes of Grave del Friuli are idyllic for Pinot Grigio, cool and dry, they ripen healthy grapes. This vital and refreshing wine is vinified and cellared under the subterranean vaults of the Plozner wineworks.

Very near the bottom of the Italian boot, between the heel of Apulia and Calabrian toe, you'll find the idyllic pastorals of Basilicata, a place of tantalizing gatronomy and bountiful harvests. Established in 1909, one of the founding fathers at Compagnie Francaise des Grands Vins was agronomist engineer Eugene Charmat, eponymous inventor of the fermentation technique now employed to create the majority of sparkling wines around the world. Vinified from the noble cepage of Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Pinot Meunier, Pierre Deville Vin Mousseux is treated to an extended period of ageing on sedimentery yeast lees, infusing the wine with complexity and enriching the palate with creaminess, all balanced by a refreshingly dry and crisp finish.

A mostly Tempranillo wine from Castilla la Mancha, with a fifth of Shiraz, fashioned to an exuberant expression of the Spanish style. Just a few minutes southwest of the great estates at Vacqueyras and Chateauneuf du Pape lies Costieres de Nîmes. The Greeks planted one of France's very first vineyards here milenia ago. Julius Caesar's Egypt campaign veterans took up the viticulture some centuries later, labelling their stocks of locally made wine with the stamp of a crocodile. Today's Costieres de Nîmes makes Shiraz Grenache of such elegance and style, so akin to her famous siblings to the east, that they have been conscripted under the Origine Contrôlee of Cotes du Rhône.
