The Kalimna vineyard is one of the finest in Australia and today produces much of the base wine for Grange. Some of the vines here are as old as one hundred years and these low yielding plants produce intensely flavoured fruit that was the inspiration for Bin 28. Today the Kalimna vineyard continues to play an integral part in Bin 28, although, like most of the Penfolds red wines, this wine is today a multi regional blend. Maturation in good seasoned oak is an integral part of this wine's character. The result is a wine rich in varietal character and a robust structure.

Shiraz Mourvedre / / SouthAustralia
The abstruse Bin 2 saw its inaugural vintage in 1960 but was discontinued until the 1970s. Originally branded as an Australian Burgundy, Bin 2 has always been a soft, medium bodied mix of Mourverdre and Shiraz characterised by complexity and palate grip. Treated to a year's maturation in seasoned French and American oak, its succulent, juicy and fresh Rhônesque orientation is underpinned by an alluring savoury base of quinces and date pudding, decidedly old world in styling, the understated affluence of Bin 2 demands deliberation and calls for cuisine.

Bin 150 is pure Shiraz, vinified from fruit grown to a relatively tiny area of Barossa. The hamlet of Marananga lies very close to the centre of the Barossa Valley floor, slightly to the north and west, where warm, dry conditions and rich red soils create a mesolclime which has sired many of the Barossa's most conspicuous efforts. Bin 150 delivers a contemporary Shiraz style, framed by a mix of French and American oak, old and new, conceived from the ancient soils of a special place and crafted from fruit grown to one of Australia's earliest viticultural precincts.

Yattarna is local indigenous meaning gradually, reflecting the time spent refining the cuvee before it's inaugural vintage. Bin number 144 is derived from the total number of trials undertaken in the wine's development. The aspiration and independence of mind that the late Max Schubert brought to Penfolds winemaking philosophy inspired the winery to embark on the project of creating a white wine that would one day rival the standards of Penfolds Grange. Finely interwoven and seamlessly presented, the 1999 is a standout Chardonnay of impeccable pedigree with an extended, elegant finish.

The Barossa Valley was planted extensively to Grenache, Mourvedre and Shiraz by early settlers. In the 1950s Penfolds started experimenting with the blend, trials which culminated in the release of Bin 138s forebears. An answer to the growing call for the highly perfumed and fleshy Rhone style of red, Bin 138 is sourced from old, low yielding Barossa Valley sites, much of the fruit from independent growers. This is a very special Penfolds red wine indeed, one of the few that remains in component form whilst maturing in small, well seasoned oak barrels.

It was originally labelled as Claret, and whilst the quality of Shiraz has increased immeasurably ever since, very little has changed about how Bin 128 is made, it's vinification follows the traditional Penfolds house style. One of the few Penfold wines which are sourced exclusively from a specific region, Bin 128 reflects the uniqueness of Coonawarra and the elegant, stylish expressions of cooler climate Terra rossa Shiraz.
