Why Meslier? Within the region of Champagne Meslier, or Petite Meslier as it is otherwise known, the Meslier grape is used, albeit in small quantities. Prized for it's acidity it gives the sparkling wine a vivaciousness synonymous with the style. Not only does Meslier bring acidity, but also vinosity and delightful light florals to both bouquet and taste. Irvine decided to tirage Meslier completely on its own for a number of reasons, but primarily to find out exactly what the grape could offer when ripened fully and fashioned into a pure Methode Traditionelle.

Irrewarra vineyard was established to the eastern environs of Lake Colac by the Calvert family in 2001, predominantly six acres of a mixture Pinot Noir clones on own rootstock. A magical place defined by an eloquent expression of terroir, its long, fruitful growing season extends to mid April, as the closely packed bunches of Pinot Noir ripen fully into juicy treasure chests of flavour, adroitly lined by the finest, satin sheen tannins. Its bucolic splendour of animate pasteurs, wild cherries and sun dried spice, resonate long and lovely on an elegantly structured, texturally mineral palate.

For those who like their Pinot Noir to be long, savoury and lean, with oodles of fruit to wax lyrical about. A collation of harvests from the Sexton and Tarraford vineyards, with contributions from a fraternity of superior local growers. The uncrushed grapes are wild yeast fermented and treated to a light carbonic maceration in the manner of a Beaujolais, achieving a vigorously fruit driven Pinot Noir with crisp acids and stirring aromas. Enjoy alongside both versions of rare breast or crisp skinned duck, the perfect match to tapas and Al fresco faire.

The steeply sloping blocks in Upper Yarra Valley, astride Gembrook Rd and adjacent to Hoddles Creek, were designed by the hand of Providence, to yield stellar vintages of world class Pinot Noir. The challenging hillsides prohibit mechanical harvesting, it's all done by hand, except for the treading, laboriously foot stomped. No expenses were ever spared in the construct of the Hoddles Creek cellars, purpose built for the ageing of good red wine. The estate Winery Block and Top Paddock are planted mostly to Pinot Noir clone MV6, with smaller parcels of 114, 115, GSV15 and MS1.

The finest parcels of estate grown fruit, planted to four superior rows of Pinot Noir on the Hoddles Creek property at Gembrook. A holistic management of the vineyard is central to the realization of exceptional fruit, respect for local fauna and a focus on traditonal hands on viticulture are essential to the integrity of harvest. Rows 22 to 26 always yield something spectacular with each new vintage, the mix of Burgundian and new world clones are hand picked and separately vinified for release as an exquisite limited edition, only made in the finest vintage years.

Champagne Henriot was officially founded in 1808 by Appoline Henriot. She was the niece of the very famous Abbe Godinot, an erudite man who contributed greatly to improvements in viticulture and sparkling winemaking. Champagne Henriot became the favourite of the Dutch court and the Hapsburg emperors. Adam Henkell established himself as a wine merchant in Mainz circa 1832, laying the foundation of today's Henkell & Soehnlein. As early as 1856, Henkell devoted himself to the production of popular sparkling wines. Following the creation of the Henkell Trocken label in the late 19th century, his grandson Otto transformed this delightful, sparkling cuvee into a highly esteemed marque that was enjoyed worldwide. Mostly Pinot Meunier with a quarter Chardonnay and smaller portion of Pinot Noir, a third of reserve wines are included in the assemblage. Champagne H.Blin & Cie was established 1947 by respected winemaker, Henri Blin. Today it is a co-operative of more than a hundred growers situated in and around the little village of Vincelles in the Marne Valley. A highly distinguished area of Champagne, Pinot Meunier is the dominant grape in Vallee de la Marne, where an abundance of southern facing slopes produce the ripest wines with full aroma.

There's a very special block of exquisitely good Chardonnay called Flanders Fields, adjacent to the Grove Estate wineworks. Vinified alongside a superior parcel of local Pinot Noir and treated to the full regimen of Méthode Traditionelle, an astonishingly full flavoured effervescent wine brimming with lozenge citrus and underpinned by the toasty richness of sedimentery lees autolysis. An opportune confluence of higher altitudes and chilly climes, ripens the grapes to mesmerising intensity. A zealous adherence to the ways of la Champenoise completes a sensational Cuvée.

Named for a rare grasshopper Sigaus childi, found only at Central Otago within the Earnscleugh gold mine tailings, just across the road from Grasshopper Rock vineyard. The site is fortuitously harsh and sufficiently challenging to make the vines work their hardest. With extremes of heat and cold comes the risk of severe spring and autumn frosts, the property represents a demanding but rewarding environment for the production of world class Pinot Noir.
