The inaugural vintage at Picardy produced a single Pinot Noir. With each passing year Picardy evolves into an even more dramatic expression of Pemberton's answer to Burgundy. The mix of clones has infused greater interest in the wine, showing greater texture, structure and complexity. A light to medium bodied effort with the presence and taste of a top end Cote-d'Or, Picardy would have to be one of the finest Pinot Noir in the new world. An alluring wine that's almost too easy to drink, its finely grained tannins making it completely approachable while young.

A mostly Tempranillo wine from Castilla la Mancha, with a fifth of Shiraz, fashioned to an exuberant expression of the Spanish style. Spicy by name and nature, Picante is a rich, generously flavoured red wine with spirited varietal fruit and resonating tannins. Built around a core of intensely flavoured Tempranillo, which provides structure and fine tannin balance, a component of choice Shiraz contributes middle palate weight, spiced plum compexity and supple textures. A portion of declassified Rioja Tempranillo adds complexity and length.

Brangie Vineyard is a demure two acres of King Valley vine, established in the late 1990s along the banks of Hurdle Creek, on a site that's fortuitously positioned for red wine viticulture. A half acre each of Tempranillo and Touriga Nacional, planted to sandy clay loams which restrict the vigor of vines and concentrate characters in the fruit, yield a precious harvest of the most intensely flavoured grapes with each vintage. A cherry filled wine of lithe spice and winsome florals, Mario's Blend resolves on a length of sweet and savoury fruits, supported by the finest chalky tannins.

Marc Scalzo takes time out from his duties as chief winemaker at Rutherglen Estates to tend his closely coddled Beechworth vines. The two regions share a predisposition to yield structured Shiraz of remarkable purity and finesse, wines that are highly articulate of their very special terroir. The mineral rich hills of Beechworth impart added elegance and a conspicuous measure of Burgundian savoir faire. There are precious few plantings on Harry's Block but they yield the most invaluable fruit, immaculately crafted into the first growth of Beechworth Shiraz.

Philip Shaw was twice International Wine and Spirit Competition's Winemaker of Year. Following a career as chief at Rosemount and Southcorp, Shaw struggled to determine the most favourable terroir in Australia until he accidentally caught sight of the undulating countryside whilst flying over Orange in New South Wales. Shiraz from Orange differs to Australia's warmer regional styles. Reminiscent of a Rhone Valley, Orange Shiraz displays distinct bright spice with a fine pepper character revealing the vineyard's cooler, elevated origins.

The story of Stonewell began when Peter Lehmann decided to make a special Shiraz of immense intensity and muscularity that would demand time in the barrel and bottle before release, named after the district that best showed the characters he admired most in Barossa Shiraz.

Stonewell is the very best of vintage, one of the new world's great Shiraz. A powerful, stately wine, Stonewell is the jewel in the crown of Peter Lehmann's most spectacular efforts, the grapes are drawn from the lowest yielding, old vine blocks in all Barossa Valley. Some planted well over a century ago, produce frugal bunches with parched berries, precious little black gems which are at the heart of Stonewell Shiraz. A flagship effort, the heart of Eight Songs lies within some very old vineyards spread across the landscape of Barossa Valley. Peter Lehmann himself, walked these vineyards every vintage, seeking those parcels with a concentration of flavours so essential to the Eight Songs style, vibrant and statuesque, yet elegant and distinctively soft. Egerton E S Dennis settled on ninety acres of vineyard at McLaren Flat after serving in the RAAF. Ege pioneered the production of Mead and sold his crop of wine grapes to some of Australia's most eminent brands before founding his own label in 1971, with the object of converting the high quality fruit into pure, estate made wines. Since establishment, Dennis Wines have collected hundreds of medals and accolades at national and international taste offs, twice claiming the revered Bushing King awards for best wine at the McLaren Vale Winemakers Exhibition.

Egerton Dennis made a major contribution to the establishment of McLaren Vale as an internationally renowned wine region. His son remains a hands on viticulturallist who knows every vine by name. An immensely satisfying Aussie style of Grenache from the Peter Dennis estate vineyard adjacent the preeminent terroirs of Tatachilla and Kangarilla Roads. Fermented on skins for optimal extractions before feeding through a gentle basket press, a year's maturation in Fench and American oak barriques achieves a brightly lit style of lifted cherry fruit and lithe, supple tannins.

Exclusively estate grown Cabernet Sauvignon from the Peter Dennis Nindethana vineyard at McLaren Flat on the eastern side of McLaren Vale. The beautifull property is fortuitously situated at the base of Mount Lofty Ranges where the soil, climate and rainfall are a bliss for viticulture. Fruit is vinified in traditional open fermenters followed by an old fashioned basket press and fifteen months oak maturation. An intense Cabernet nose of currant, sweet violets and cassis resolves on a mouth filling McLaren Vale palate, layered with lozenge and dark berry fruit characters.

The excellence of Petaluma's stately Cabernet wines is due in great part to the virtue of Coonawarra's most distinguished sites. The fabulous Terra rossa soils and calcrete limestone deposits underneath, contribute to the majesty of Petaluma Coonawarra. Five choice blocks of estate Coonawarra vine are the source of fruit, for the construct of a rich yet elegant, mouthfilling Cabernet Sauvignon, slightly more approachable than the opulent estate flagships, fashioned to the cherished and enduring, profoundly Petaluma styling.

The 1999 is a stepping-stone on the long pathway of Petaluma's success at crafting the ultimate Coonawarra Merlot. The paradox of supreme quality is always how to achieve in the vineyard, concentration and structure without sacrificing the finesse which is a hallmark of the world's best Merlot. Coonawarra's innate suitability for this varietal, and Petaluma's distinguished sites, offer a mosaic which maximises the quality of this exceptional wine.
