The Barossa Valley was planted extensively to Grenache, Mourvedre and Shiraz by early settlers. In the 1950s Penfolds started experimenting with the blend, trials which culminated in the release of Bin 138s forebears. An answer to the growing call for the highly perfumed and fleshy Rhone style of red, Bin 138 is sourced from old, low yielding Barossa Valley sites, much of the fruit from independent growers. This is a very special Penfolds red wine indeed, one of the few that remains in component form whilst maturing in small, well seasoned oak barrels.

Penfolds Bin 128 remains one of the purest editions within the Penfolds stable. Firstly, as a Coonawarra Shiraz, it is one of the few Penfolds reds that isn't a multi regional blend. Launched in 1962, Penfolds Bin 128 reflects the unique climate and growing conditions of the Coonawarra and the elegant style of cool-climate Shiraz. French oak highlights the pepper, spice and floral characteristics that define this style. Great attention is paid to fruit ripeness for the Bin 128, resulting in the developement of fuller Shiraz flavours, in a wine of structure and style.

In 1960 Bill Redman persuaded Max Schubert to acquire a parcel of Coonawarra Terra rossa soil and the Bin 128 experience was born. It was originally labelled as Claret, and whilst the quality of Shiraz has increased immeasurably ever since, very little has changed about how Bin 128 is made, it's vinification follows the traditional Penfolds house style. One of the few Penfold wines which are sourced exclusively from a specific region, Bin 128 reflects the uniqueness of Coonawarra and the elegant, stylish expressions of cooler climate Terra rossa Shiraz.

Originally released in 1976, the Koonunga Hill range has established a sound reputation for quality and consistency, while availing red wine enthusiasts of the opportunity to approach the enduring Penfolds style. The inaugural 1976 vintage of Koonunga Hill Shiraz Cabernet was a legendary wine, still drinking well at Penfolds red wine recorking clinics. Reissued under the Seventy Six moniker, it has attracted a tremendous amount of critical acclaim, twice recipient of the highly prestigious Wine Press Club Trophy for Best Dry Red Wine.

From the closely coddled, fully bio dynamic Thomas Block at Landcross Farm, McLaren Vale Grenache can trace its legacy back to some of the most historically significant rootstock in the world. Grapes are all hand picked and destemmed, a measure are included as whole bunches and treated to a fortnight of ferments, pumpovers and plunge, before pressing into a selection of pre loved French oak barriques for a spell of age. Grenache's distinctive nose of pepper, brambles and lifted strawberry spice, before a wonderful palate of soft, silky textures, winegums, jelly jube and fine fleshy plum.

An assemblage of Shiraz from four of the six Paxton Certified Biodynamic vineyards, Quandong Farm and Maslin, the Jones and 19th Block, crafted with a view to expressing the brightness of flavour and sublime charm, of fruit grown to the most exacting environmentally sustainable principles. The Paxton team are focused on making wines of intensity, but also with layers of texture, good flavour and genuine interest. A superior quality of McLaren Vale through and through, Shiraz of excellent fruit character, precision and exquisite balance.

From a single row of the Iberian Graciano, grafted on to mature Chardonnay rootstock on the auspicious Paxton Thomas Block at McLaren Vale. Fruit is treated to a fortnight of cool ferments, plunging and pumpovers, followed by a gentle press into French oak barriques for nine months maturation. A deliciously food friendly wine of lithe spice and herb aromatics, raspberries and lavender, gently seasoned with a touch of white pepper. Adorably elegant tannins lie in support of juicy raspberry fruits, its supple savouryness making the perfect accompaniement to cutlets and all Mediterranean fare.

For decades the Paxton family have nurtured their prized McLaren Vale vineyards, some are over a hundred years old. David Paxton believes that the science of viticulture is just as critical as the fine art of vinification. It's this level of care and passion for the soil that has produced extraordinary fruit and stellar wines. Harvested at the optimum ripeness for this wine style, Shiraz from five premium parcels, the Grenache from three, all fermented separately and assembled into a deep red wine of vigorous flavours and sleek, velvetine tannins.

One of Heathcote's longest established winemakers, Paul Osicka planted his vines in the 1950s, when Heathcote as a winegrowing region was but a twinkle in the eye. Old fashioned practices are employed in the vineyard. Vines are hand pruned and fruit is selectively hand picked. A high profile local identity and a bit of a cult figure, Osicka specializes in raising parcels of intensely flavoured grapes which translate into vigorous Shiraz wines. Osicka's small batch production is highly anticipated each year by Shiraz enthusiasts in the know.

Paul Osicka had the vision to establish vines in the parched sandy soils of Heathcote's easterm precincts during the 1950s. His closely husbanded vines are deliberately trained to very low yields, ensuring the berries are smaller and more intense in colour and flavour. Osicka adheres to strict organic principles, shunning the use of herbicides, insecticides or irrigation. A highly respected local identity, he retains access to the finest parcels of Cabernet Sauvignon in all Heathcote.

Graeme's Blend is the Passing Cloud flagship. Eponymously labelled after the proprietor winemaker, Graeme's Blend has consistently delivered a cornucopia of breathtaking Bendigo fruit every year since inaugural vintage 1980. The unirrigated Passing Clouds property produces meagre yields these days and grapes are called upon from outstanding vineyards between Bendigo and Heathcote. Parcels of Cabernet and Shiraz grown to eminent Bendigo sites are assembled around the backbone of estate grown fruit to create a complex, more powerful wine.

The noblest varietal grape of Italy, essential to the great first growths of Tuscany and Chianti, Sangiovese also makes a highly attractive table red, brimming with all the character and charm of the world's most approachable styles in food friendly wine. A collation of harvests from fine vineyards in Puglia, are crafted by the Pasqua team into a fruit forward style that's lined with supple tannins while being pleasingly dry. The first choice to accompany porcini pappardelle or polpettini e penne, a blissful pairing with cotoletta vitello or trancio di salmone.

Pasqua have established an enviable reputation for excellence after almost a century of the finest Veneto vintages. Montepulciano d'Abruzzo are enjoyed throughout the world of wine for their food friendly nature, deliciously dry, savoury palate and delicate, affable tannins. Pasqua take the pick of fruit from the choicest Abruzzo vineyards and match the quality of harvest with a minimalist vinification aimed at retaining the character and charm. The Partisan team are people of the soil, taking up McLaren Vale viticulture at a time in history when others were pulling out their vines to pursue more lucrative agriculture. They now take aim with each vintage, at identifying the most superior parcels of McLaren Vale fruit, to craft a range of wines which can best articulate their unique provenance and sense of place. A generously proportioned Grenache Shiraz Mouverdre, offering an exquisite length of intense blackberry fruit flavours, supported by fine grainy tannins and a measure of flattering, judicious oak.

Partisan wines are created to be fundamentally endowed with maximum varietal character and discernible McLaren Vale charm. Montespertoli lies to the southwest of Florence, between the valleys of Pesa and d'Elsa, a range of sloping hills in an open and sun filled countryside, where cypress trees sway in the breeze, ploughed fields are defined by woodlands and olive groves, which yield a golden oil that enriches local cuisine. Sangiovese grapes are vinified by Fattorie Parri to a mix of modern and traditional techniques, into a complex and elegant wine, intense with perfume and supported by sound palate structure.

Real Chianti, the way it was always meant to be, Sangiovese through and through, a lovely wine with maximum appeal for all those who enjoy the stylishness and charm of all good things Italian. Fattorie Parri have been making fine Montespertoli wines for generations, crafted to an accord of new and old world vinification techniques, aimed at capturing the inimitable character of the Tuscan countryside while retaining the enduring appeal of good Chianti. Parri Poggiano is a gentle red wine which drinks astonishingly well with any and every cuisine.

Integral to the style and quality of Parker has been the unique mesoclimate of the Old Block Merlot site in southern Coonawarra. There are noticeable climatic and soil differences within the fifteen kilometre strip that impart unique qualities to wine. Less prone to frost, Old Block has a higher median temperature, and the fruit can be treated to an additional hang time of up to fourteeen days. An opulent, slightly spicy Merlot in which the toasty oak merges well with the mouthfilling qualities of fruit, tannins are supple and the finish long.

Parker Estate was built from the ground up in the right way, with the intention of producing precisely this style of wine. Established in 1985 by an old hand within the industry, quality winemaking was the only priority and commercial constraints played no part in the development. A mostly Cabernet wine with small portions of Merlot and Petit Verdot, grown to an exceptional site, ranking as one of South Australia's finest. The fruit is characterised by very dark colours, super ripe flavours, excellent complexity with good alcohol, density and structure.

Full-bodied, powerful, French-styled 2001 exhibits aromas of lead pencil/graphite, creme de cassis, cedar, and tobacco. Scents of chocolate, currants, well-integrated oak, plenty of power and length, sweet tannin, and enormous potential, it will drink beautifully for 10-12 years. The tannins are very fine and powdery, already showing great integration at this early stage. Long dry and fruity finish, drink now and until 2011.

Outstanding Langton's Classification. John Parker's long and distinguished career in the industry fuelled a desire to produce a great Australian wine from within the nation's preeminent red wine region, culminating in the release of Terra Rossa First Growth, mostly the Reynella clone of Cabernet Sauvignon with a tenth of Merlot.

Coonawarra did not happen by chance, it was established on sound scientific principles after the assessment of extensive feasibility studies. The Parker Estate Vineyards at the southern end of Coonawarra, were established 1985 on rich Terra Rosa over limestone soils. Parker have achieved a remarkable reputation within Australia and throughout the world of wine, wherever great vintages are revered for their integrity and continuity of excellence. Commercial constraints played no part in the development. John Parker was driven by a passion to create the First Growth of Coonawarra Cabernet.

The essential Mornington Pinot Noir, by one of Australia's leading proponents of the variety and most eminent regional performers. Grapes are sourced from three estate leased properties at Red Hill and a number of superlative sites tended by good growers along the Peninsula. The bouquet offers an abundance of lifted blackcurrant, plum and spice. The palate is generous with cherry plum fruit flavours supported by soft fine grained tannins. The Paringa team work towards the ideal time of picking, when flavour development and ripeness are just right.

Paringa Estate has established an unassailable repute over the last twenty years as one of the leading small winery vineyards in the country, named Australian Winery of the Year by James Halliday. Paringa Shiraz won a total of six trophies including Best of Show at the 2006 Royal Sydney, sweeping the field with five Gold Medals and five Trophies, including the prestigious Best of Show and Best Shiraz at the 2009 Royal Sydney, as well as Best Shiraz Trophy Royal Melbourne. Vintage 2007 has claimed a total of five Gold Medals to date.

Within Paringa's superlative Mornington estate property, lie three precious blocks of vine, yielding unique harvests of the most extraordinary Shiraz. Each parcel is picked on the specific day determined by individual ripeness, to be separately vinified in a bespoke manner, aimed at preserving the individual character of terroir.
