Spain's most prestigious winemaking estate was founded in 1864 by Don Eloy Lecanda y Chaves. Vasse Felix were briefed in the 1970s by Dr Tom Cullity, Margaret River's founding vigneron, to make the best possible wine. Balance, elegance, complexity and restrained power are the hallmarks, the direct result of an uncompromising approach to quality. Among the first estate plantings were Cabernet and Malbec,Tom Cullity is crafted from the fruit of these eminent old vines, the ultimate elocution of Margaret River Cabernet.

Vasse Felix construct a vigorous Shiraz of considerable depth, concentration and solid structure whilst retaining elegance and finesse. Careful fruit selection and an astute use of oak achieve balance and complexity. One of the most satisfying examples of West Australian Shiraz, stylish and distinctively regional. Vasse Felix has the oldest Shiraz vines on the cape, while several slightly younger blocks provide an understated finesse and elegance that is so often lost in the rush to create a Margaret River Shiraz of opulence and power.

For as long as Margaret River has been famous, it has been famous for Cabernet. Vasse Felix is the region's original winery and protagonist of the stately Cabernet Sauvignon genre. A measure of Merlot and Malbec can be added in varying proportions from vintage to vintage, softening the tannin profile and contributing perfumed, floral lift to the beautifully fragrant nose. The structure is fine and firm with a freshness of acidity that makes the mouth water. Rich, dusty tannins support a wine of great power, persistence and length.

The great structural elements of Cabernet Sauvignon are embraced with the dark fruit of Malbec, a collation of superior harvests from the northern parts of Margaret River, the pick of elite blocks, whence optimal ripeness is assured with each and every vintage. The weighty structure and determinedly drying tannins of Cabernet are mellowed by the softness of Malbec, bringing the whole assemblage forward, making Filius, ripe and ready for those anxious aspirants who adore the Margaret River style but are unable to await the distance.

Shiraz grown to the sultry climes of Margaret River is instantly recognizable for its sweetness and power on the palate, as well as the attractive floral, anise and cherry characters which form the body and flesh. Cabernet Sauvignon adds structure and length, further defining the tannins and contributing a savoury backbone which constructs a more complete wine. The Cabernet Shiraz vintages of Vasse Felix are legendary, known for their generous palates brimming with sweet red berry fruits, velvet textures and judicious measure of finely integrated oak.

Vasse Felix are known for their profound and compelling vintages of Cabernet Sauvignon, performing well whatever the vagaries of growing season, by virtue of auspicious soils and propitious clime. Intense, yet elegantly structured, the first red wine ever released from within the nascent Margaret River, it remains to this day, the elder statesman of the region. Fruit is sourced from the best vineyards in Wilyabrup. Cabernet is a robust variety, ideally suited to Margaret River's balmy maritime climate and superb, well drained soils.

It was as recently as 1965 that Dr John S Gladstones brought the world's attention to Margaret River. Two years later Dr Tom Cullity planted vines and Vasse Felix was born. The profoundly perfumed and structured bond of Merlot and Cabernet is synonymous with Margaret River. Cabernet's firm tannin structure is mellowed by the generosity of Merlot and Malbec, contributing remarkable aromatics, flavour and sound structure. Valley of the Giants can source grapes from the best West Australian vineyards, retaining access to the quality of fruit which can translate into stunning everyday wines. But but this does not mean the team can't do better. It's a priority to preserve and enhance the gifts of the vineyard through an attention to detail and minimal handling throughout the vinification. The vines were planted in the nineties, making them the oldest and most balanced in the vineyard. Unico Zelo take delight from recycling and breathing life into wayward old sites. Exocarpos is crafted from the fruit of a long neglected Nebbiolo vineyard in the scrublands of Gumeracha, one of the first ever planted to Adelaide Hills. A dozen different clones have been treated to a traditionalist old world style of vinification, extended macerations and eighteen months in a selection of well seasoned larger format oak fudres. Defined by its fleshyness and black cherry olive savouryness, supported by supple yet structured, long elegant tannins.

From a propitious, pebble and slate strewn vineyard in the illustrious Polish Hill River precincts of Valley Clare, Dolcetto blooms beautifully under the warming days and continental climes. Unico Zelo take a decidely Al Fresco approach, creating a style that's enticingly perfumed, animate and enthusiastic as a youthful wine, fruit forward yet juicily dry, just perfect to accompany relaxed cuisine. Brimming with bouquets of bright maraschino, red apples, glace and plum, its delicate fruit and svelte tannin structure are revitalized by a line of tangy, cherry rhubarb acidity.

Italy offers two entirely different wines under the moniker of Montepulciano, the other type comes from a town of the same name in Tuscany, this is the one that's actually made of Montepulciano grapes, picked off vineyards under the castle walls of Crecchio in Abruzzo. Respect for traditional winemaking practices is essential, Tenuta Ulisse ferment their grapes in open vats, through the action of wild yeasts, just as the wines of Crecchio have always been made. Beautifully perfumed of cherries and plum, seamless and stylish on a length of juicy, liquorice tannins.

Such are the excellence and distinction of Montepulciano from Abruzzo that they have earned Denominazione di Origine Protetta. The viticulture is essentially traditional, vines are closely managed and all fruit hand picked, the house of Tenuta Ulisse has brought a measure of modernity to Abruzzo, making the wines more accessible and consistent than ever. Its deep garnet colour, persistence of cherry blackberry flavours and balanced, bucolic tannins make a well structured red wine to accompany elegant pasta recipes and fine, rich meats.

A collation of hand picked parcels Montepulciano, grown to mature vineyards around the commune of Lanciano in the ancient viticultural precinct of Chieti, midway up the Italian boot, within view of the Adriatic. A magical place for gastronomy and breathtaking vistas, where the Mediterranean sun reduces the ripening grapes and intensifies the flavours within. From the distinguished Stevens family Old Hillside property at Pokolbin. The site, established 1867, may contain the oldest productive vines in Hunter Valley. Vintage is one of the earliest and shortest in Australia, yields are very low and there is an inexplicable affinity between the terroir and style of Shiraz which has brought Hunter Valley so much international renown. The small, dehydrated, ultra ripe berries, characterized by lifted levels of natural fruit sugar and toughened skins, are little treasure chests of graceful flavours and light but luscious tanins.
