Tyrrell is inextricably linked to the story of wine across the great viticultural precincts of Australia. Tyrrell have strayed from their Hunter Valley roots to isolate a superlative site at Willunga, nestled at the heart of McLaren Vale. Tyrrell's planted their Heathcote vineyard in 1994, on the ancient russet red Cambrian soil, at the foot of Mt Camel along the southern end of the Colbinabbin Range. This narrow strip with its unique topography, gives the wine its rich, yet refined flavours that typify Heathcote wines, especially Shiraz. The climate is warm, dry and reliable from year to year. Vines are relatively low yielding, producing grapes which are renowned for their ability to ripen to complete flavour development, yet still retain excellent levels of natural acidity and tranquil, fine grained tannins.

Shiraz is the cardinal red wine grape of Australia, it reigns supreme in viticultural precincts across the nation, planted to fine vineyards in Heathcote however, it comes into its own as a unique regional style that's renowned throughout the world. Tyrrell have gone right to the heart of Australia's most illustrious Shiraz appellation to realize parcels of fruit with tenacious tannins and profound varietal character. An inclusion of fruit from good vineyards on the Limestone Coast, McLaren Vale and Hunter Valley, rounds ot the wine and tames the tannins.

Tyrrell pioneered Pinot Noir in Australia when they established two inaugural acres of vine in 1972, amongst the first ever commercial Hunter Valley plantings. The 1976 Tyrrell's Vat 6 Pinot Noir was selected for the 1979 Gault Milleau World Dozen in Paris, after beating wines submitted from the finest vineyards around the world. Tyrrell made a major contribution to the development of Heathcote as a world class winegrowing region. The Picnic Point label depicts Sam Neill's grandparents picnicking on Karitane Beach at Otago circa 1919. The jovial chap with a pipe is Sidney Neill, established importer of French wines, among other things. Some friends, a blanket or two, a bit of lunch and a glass of wine, looks like life was good. Picnic Point is made for times like these. Sam Neill's entry level Pinot Noir, though by any measure, a praiseworthy effort. Each year Picnic Point release a limited amount of vintage, so you may find yourself on a journey bound for Central Otago to find it.

Earnscleugh Valley was the site of a gold rush in the 1860s, the industrious miners dug a watercourse through the valley which today serves to nourish the world's southernmost appellation of Pinot Noir. The Last Chance is a small scenic terrace, planted to a special Burgundy clone of Pinot Noir which yields a magnificently structured, generously proportioned wine. Carefully sorted bunches of hand picked fruit, treated to a traditional old world ferment in open vats and term of age in fine French oak. A lifted spice and dried herb nose before a palate of amazing density, length and persistence, elegance and poise.

Sam Neill's father was a major in the Royal Irish Fusiliers, he returned to the family wine and liquor business after retirement and inspired his famous son to take up viticulture. There are six hectares of Fusilier under vine, planted to deep alluvial silty gravels, on a steppe of rolling northerly facing terraces at the western end of Felton Road. A mix of stemmed grapes and whole bunches are filled to 3½ tonne wooden cuvee for several days cold soak and wild yeast ferment, followed by transfer to medium and light toast French oak barriques for eleven months maturation.

Sam Neill's perennial favourite, from the original planting of his homestead vines at the heart of Gibbston Valley. Established 1993 to a unique Burgundian clone of Pinot Noir, meticulously husbanded, First Paddock is one of the eldest blocks of vine in all Central Otago. Vibrant ruby hues, lifted perfumed bouquet of dark cherries and plum, concentrated herbal complexities, depth and persistence before a distinctive lengthy savoury finish. The articulation of Central Otago Pinot Noir complex yet elegant, generously proportioned, brimming with fruit, superbly structured, florals, violets and wild spice.

An assemblage of fruit grown to several elite Central Otago sites, the estate flagship barrel selection, from the Sam Neill family vineyards, normally a selection picked off Gibbston First Paddock, Bannockburn's Fusilier and Earnscleugh's Red Bank. A charming effort in Burgundian styling, unequivocally world class, artisanally crafted Central Otago Pinot Noir. Each block and clone are picked and fermented separately, the final wine is assembled just before bottling. Small batch? You bet, a mere few hundred dozen are made each year.

After a remarkable five years on the prestigious Wine Spectator Top 1OO, the Two Hands story has gone from strength to strength. The team are focused on injecting their wines with real identity, personality and charm. Lily's Garden is crafted without compromise from fruit grown to superior vineyards within the Two Hands estate portfolio. The palate is filled with rich flavours of raspberries and black pepper spice, liquorice allsorts and plum. The finished wine is an unctuous Shiraz with striking dark colour and cryptic aromas.

Michael Twelftree and Richard Mintz established Two Hands with the aim of making the best possible Shiraz wines from fruit grown to good vineyards. Their intention was and still is to show the diversity of Australian Shiraz by highlighting regional characteristics and allowing the fruit to be the primary feature of the final wine. By working closely with growers and focusing on small batch handling, Two Hands are able to identify parcels of old Barossa vineyard Shiraz which can be assembled into an exceptional wine of salient varietal definition.

From the very beginning, Two Hands have been very well received by a healthy stream of accolades. Notable reviewer Robert M. Parker anointed Two Hands as the finest negociant operation south of the equator. Grenache, Mourverdre and Shiraz, Barossa through and through. Buoyant raspberry, red cherry characters with a restrained savoury palate, grainy tannins and delicately integrated oak. A serious food wine that shows what a wonderful marriage these three varietals make judiciously balanced with harmony in mind.

A pure, flagship Cabernet Sauvignon from a mature single vineyard on Radford Road in the Seppeltsfield sub-district of the Barossa Valley. The Two Hands wineworks at Marananga was designed specifically for small batch production of the very best parcels of fruit. Very occasionally, the Two Hands isolate a block of vines that are earmarked to be handled separately, and vinified into a tremendous Barossa Cabernet. Length of palate and great persistence balanced by excellent depth is the hallmark to the subtle but complex Aphrodite.

After the crushing of grapes and completion of ferments, most red wines are filled to oak, it is here that the ageing barrels must be topped up from time to time, as a portion of the stocks evaporate into thin air. It's known in winemaking parlance as angel's share. A wine of great personality, personable and charismatic, the very best of McLaren Vale in every way, Angels Share articulates the more vivaciously ripe and upfront style of Aussie Shiraz.

Aerope is the Two Hands estate flagship, significantly a pure Grenache wine, representing the very finest old vines Barossa Grenache. Aerope is assembled annually from a chosen few of the most exceptional barrels, vinified from grapes that are hand picked off an eighty year old, dry grown vineyard on Radford Road, near the ancient Barossa winegrowing hamlet of Greenock.

Bendigo offers some of the nation's most charming and distinctive accords of Viognier and Shiraz. Sergio Carlei makes wine from the heart, his passion has moved him from the family garage to a fully fledged artisanal winemaking operation. Carlei and his grower Paul Jenkins have combined their respective talents to craft the superlative line of Turners Crossing wines. Enter a Shiraz Viognier that's complex and integrated, richly flavoured yet tightly structured, expressing the essence of Bendigo terroir, rich, warming, full bodied and immensely satisfying.

Excellent Langtons Classification. It was at Turkey Flat, on the banks of Tanunda Creek whence bush turkeys once roamed, that pioneer Silesian settler Johann Friedrich August Fiedler planted the first Shiraz during the 1840s. The maturing vines on Section One, in the Hundred of Moorooroo, were bought in 1865 by Gottlieb Ernst Schulz, a successful butcher who established a thriving business among the vines. The Schulz family are still there and up to a fifth of the grapes in today's Turkey Flat Shiraz are picked off the gnarled old vines of 1847.

One of the first grape varietals planted in Australia, Mourvedre found a new home away from home in the warm and opportune climes of Barossa Valley. Established in the 1840s and in continuous ownership by the Schulz family since 1870, Turkey Flat at Tanunda was a habitat of wild Australian Bustards, a favourite bush food of locals and early settlers. Hand picked parcels of old to very old vines Mourvedre are treated to macerations on skins and warm temperature ferments, followed by a fill to French oak hogsheads and puncheons for twenty months maturation.

Encounters with pure Mataro wines are rare. Mataro thrives in the hot and dry conditions of summer, a very late comer in budbreak and ripening, Barossa is one of the few parts of Australia with a clime which allows a full and complete ripening of Mataro grapes. Barossa Valley can also be proud as the original Australian home of ancient Mataro vineyards, some of the oldest in the world, established by Lutheran pioneers during early settlement. Turkey Flat's vines were amongst the first ever planted in Barossa Valley.

The hundred year old Turkey Flat Grenache parcels yield harvests of the most amazing concentration. Rows of traditionally spur pruned vines, husbanded in the goblet style of Vallée du Rhône, produce around two tonnes per acre, translating into intensely flavoured vintages of remarkable eloquence. Aged in a judiciously toasted selection of seasoned and new French oaks barrels, the wine achieves astonishing balance between tannin and fruit, herbaceousness and spice, all due to determining the ideal day of harvest, selective hand picking and careful sorting of the berries.

Vinified from fruit grown to the historic, hundred and fifty year old Black Flat Block, an intensely varietal Cabernet Sauvignon, infused with the edifying eucalypt characters from thickets of old gums that grow along the creek bed. Planted to a cool, shaded shallow gully, the mixed alluvials and dark, fertile Biscay clays of Black Flat Block, yield a quality of Cabernet that's as eloquent as it is unique. Highly articulate with the characterful herbaceousness of an exquisite site, Turkey Flat offers the complexity and grace to match with caramelized foie gras or the finest wagyu.

Established in the 1840s and in continuous ownership by the Schulz family since 1870, Turkey Flat at Tanunda was a habitat of wild Australian Bustards, a favourite bush food of locals and early settlers. Younger parcels of Shiraz are selected for spice and lift, a fresher and more layered version of Barossa Valley, a component of whole bunches are added for structure and seasoned, sent to a selection of well seasoned, pre loved Turkey Flat casks, to encourage the vital fruit characters to sing.

The Turkey Flat vineyards are unique, in that the estate can trace their first plantings back to early settlement in the 1840s. The site was acquired by Gottlieb Ernst Schulz in 1865, a successful butcher who established a thriving business. His descendants are still there to this day, working amongst the vines. Butchers Block is fashioned to a crowd pleasing style, Mourvèdre provides the backbone, Shiraz adds flavour, Grenache brings rustic spice and dark morello fruit. Balance is essential, each grape plays a role, yet nothing competes for your attention.

Established 1847 by Johann August Frederick Fiedler, much of the credit for the finest Shiraz in the world is due to old vines such as Turkey Flat. Dry grown and gnarled, their roots extend metres into the soil in search of moisture. That they still exist is largely due to a far sighted quarantine scheme, as South Australia was spared the phylloxera outbreak which devastated vineyards around the world in the late 1800s. After five generations of stewardship by the Schulz family, a small parcel of fruit from the original 1847 vines is bottled as a superior vintage release.
