William Lyne arrived in Van Diemen's Land on October of 1826. His descendants established Spring Vale in 1875 and have pursued farming ventures in this beautiful area of Tasmania's east coast ever since. Rodney and Lyn Lyne planted 6.6 hectares of vine at Spring Vale, principally Pinot Noir in 1986. Further plantings were made in the following years, more Pinot Noir and more Pinot Noir again, with a splash of Pinot Meunier for variety. Today, Spring Vale can lay claim to the most coveted editions of Van Diemen's Land Pinot Noir.

What Spinifex choose to do best is discover isolate parcels of old vine, sometimes overlooked or underloved, at the Cotes du Rhône end of the varietal spectrum. This is no flight of fancy, as the background of the husband and wife team includes many growing seasons in France. Papillon is bottled towards the end of vintage year. Crafted from very old material Grenache, Cinsualt and Mataro, Spinifex hand select the vines and pick grapes, vinifying the parcels with an aim of creating a wine that's all about freshness, fruit and spice, a wine that's bright and alive.

Peter Schell was winemaker at Turkey Flat from 2001 to 2005, where he familiarized himself with some of the Barossa's more obscure and precious sites. Gaining much inspiration from a succession of vintages in Provence, Peter Schell has assembled Mataro and Shiraz from a tally of old vineyards up to a hundred years of age, planted to propitious pockets of quartz shot clay and silty sand soils on the upper altitudes of Barossa Valley. Deep, complex and masculine, laced with blackberry fruits, brazil nuts, coffee and boudin noir.

A complex Rhone-style expressing the profound characteristics delivered from great old vine vineyards. Low yielding and hand tended, they deliver a quality of fruit that's worthy of the old world's most prestigious growths. A rich and effusive cépage of Mataro and Grenache, Shiraz, Carignan and Cinsault are matured in selection of large format 500 to to 3000 litres French oak barrels to develop a complex vinous flavour base while preserving fruit freshness, enhance the exciting varietal complexity and preserve the vital tannin edge.

Sperino are a noble family of surgeons and physicians, like many medicos around the world, they shared a keen interest in things oenological. Their heirs returned to their roots at the Castle of Lessona in 1999, to grow healthy grapes and make good wine. Coste della Sesia is mostly Nebbiolo, with inclusions of Vespolina and Croatina grapes, hand picked off the Ormeggio, Castagnola and Belvedere vineyards at Lessona in Orolungo. A parcel from Madonna degli Angeli in neighbouring Forte, contributes savouryness and a measure of elegant minerality.

The inaugural vintage of Lessona DOC, an achievement of five years restoration amongst the graceful old vines on the sun drenched, pre alpine plateau of Orolungo. The noble Nebbiolo wines of Piedmont have been treasured for centuries by international cognoscente, they became ever more invaluable as growers concentrated their efforts on higher yielding viticulture to the south. Reclaimed from the overgrowths of itinerant weeds and delinquent shrubs, the spectacular Lessona vines are producing precious harvests of the finest vintages ever.

An imposingly structured and elegantly balanced construct of Piedmont Nebbiolo, crafted from highly limited harvests of legacy vineyards which have been painstakingly recovered and restored. Vinified and treated to an extravagant term of four years maturation, under the historic battlements of Castello Lessona in the ancient winegrowing precincts of Biella, just an hour outside of Milan. The noble Nebbiolo wines of Piedmont are renowned for their freshness and finesse, tightly polished tannins, eloquence of fruit and exquisite velvet texture.

When Paolo Marchi returned to the family castello on Via Orolungo in 1999, he found the vineyards overgrown by wilderness and an ancient cellar with bundles of wine labels from the nineteenth century. There are now eight hectares of productive vineyard and the wines have never been better. Opulently proportioned, eloquent of the intensity and refinement which define Piedmont viticulture, the pre eminent regional classic, its polished palate of vital currant and black cassis flavours are supported by the most graceful structure and refined silky tannins.

The Lessona castleworks and cellar have been at the epicentre of a salubrious winemaking enterprise since the 1700s, they fell derelict in the 1970s and remained unproductive until 1999. The costly restoration was a labour of love for Dr Marchi, who returned to his family estate with a view to re establishing one of Piedmont's most cherished marques. Sperino Lessona is a remarkably generous Nebbiolo wine, led by its pretty rose petal and mint chocolate nose, followed by a refreshing market garden palate of intensely aromatic black bramble fruit.

The fortuitous Pinot Noir vines of Soumah were established along Hexham Road, very near the auspicious Yarra Valley hamlet of Gruyere, just a short drive from the precious plantings of Yarra Yering and Coldstream Hills. A small team of dedicated professionals practise a regimen of holistic, environmentally sound agricultural techniques, for the realization of small yield wines which are evocative of the timeless old world classics. A silky, savoury effort, driven by drying cherry flavours, a twist of sassafras oak and toothy, licorice tannins.

Soul Growers are the work of four good mates, together they represent a century of combined industry experience, employing the knowledge and skill, generously shared by some of the nation's most illustrious winemaking legends. Taking a slight sojourn from their treasured gardens in the Barossa, they accidentally stumbled across a little block of Pinot Noir, secreted away from the road side and hidden within a gully of the Adelaide Hills. A chance meeting with the grower and a handful of barrels were crafted, open fermented, basket pressed and traditionally aged in very old French casks.

A mere thousand cases of Provident Shiraz are passionately small batch vinified each year, crafted to express the integrity of the land, endowments of vintage and virtues of mateship, the very soul of Barossa Valley. Grapes are open fermented in small batches, keeping every parcel separate. Gentle basket pressings extract the juices, a traditional style of vinification preserves the expression of old fashioned Barossa viticulture, the wines are unfiltered and unfined. Provident is an assemblage of Shiraz from a dozen vineyards, matured two years in a selection of well seasoned oak hogsheads.

Soul Growers source fruit across the Barossa Valley floor, out to the high country of eastern Eden Valley ranges, from vineyards which are living history. Seppeltsfield and Tanunda, Krondorf and Langmeil Roads, Kalimna and Nuriootpa all make contributions. The work is completely manual, traditional techniques with minimal handling. The sacred cépage of Shiraz, Mourvedre and Grenache, has always been an essential tradition of Barossa winemaking, assembling the fruit of some glorious old vines into a seamless experience of heady perfumes, succulent fruit and gently undulating tannins.

A great, understated treasure of Australian viticulture is the softly spoken bequeath of ancient Barossa vineyard Mataro. Much of the priceless old rootstock was brought over by the first waves of settlers, an incalculable endowment which continues to keep on giving, generation after generation. Soul Growers grew up amongst venerable old vineyards such as these, practised and versed in the arcane art of encouraging the fruit to sing as a pure, personable wine. The Morey family celebrate a tradition of winemaking which spans five centuries along the steep banks of Mosel River. Their 2½ hectare vineyard on the outskirts of Beechworth now yields a quality of fruit which would have done the ancestors proud. The Gamay grape traditionally makes a light bodied fruity wine, its thin skin offers little tannin, for a style which drinks superbly on release. Sorrenberg work to a combination of Burgundy and Beaujolais techniques, producing an even more engaging wine through the inclusion of a soupçon Pinot Noir.

The vineyards of Barossa are blessed by a confluence of terroir and clime which form one of the world's most salubrious wine regions. The warmth of its growing season is cooled by the westerlies off Gulf St Vincent, stimulating vines to fully ripen grapes to the max. Sons of Eden source parcels of Shiraz from smaller sites in Barossa and Eden Valleys, hand chosen for their intensity and exquisite ripeness, enthused by Zephyrus, god of the west wind, to develop alluring plum, pepper and currant aromatics, opaque berry flavours and stealthy tannins.

A collaboration between one of Australia's most intrepid, artisanal boutique winemakers and skilled contract viticulturalists. Simon Cowham became intimate with Eden Valley's most exquisite sites during a tour of duty at Yalumba. He is retained by the most prestigious wineries and manages the finest Barossa vineyards. Cowham has assembled choice parcels of old vines fruit, from precious blocks over fifty years of age, grown to salubrious sites on the Eden Valley ranges and hamlet of Moculta, for a more refined style of Shiraz, alluringly perfumed, structured and statuesque.

A unique but decidedly Aussie cépage of Eden Valley Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz, fortified by the inclusion of Barossa Tempranillo. Len Pumpa was a grower of Prussian descent, he persevered throughout the lean years of Australian viticulture, at a time when table wines were unfashionable and grape growing was an unviable labour of love. The wonderful endowment of grand old vineyards now managed by Sons of Eden, are due in large part to the selfless toil of Pumpa and his devotion to the vine.

Corey Ryan is one of the nation's most intrepid, artisanal winemakers, a specialist at small batch editions, he is called upon by some of the most eminent brands to craft limited releases of the most memorable vintages in Barossa and Eden Valleys Shiraz. A compilation of fruit from the Marschall Family vineyards in the Tanunda and Ebenezer precincts of Barossa Valley. The rich iron soils of Ebenezer contribute sound structure, palate weight and length, the sandy terroirs of Tanunda bring exhilarating freshness and bright aromatic lift.

The topical old vines Barossa cépage of Grenache, Shiraz and Mourverdre, fashioned to a style which would have warmed the hearts of the earliest Barossa settlers. The dominant component of Grenache is picked off an exceptionally low yielding property at Light Pass, originally planted by the Kennedy family in the 1960s. Leo Joe Kennedy husbanded these precious old vines for decades, he knew each planting by name and reserved the pick of fruit for inclusion into many of the Barossa's most memorable vintages.

The temperate climes of Valley Eden are cooled by easterly gully winds, which ensure a long slow ripening and complete development of varietal characters in the grapes. A harvest of Cabernet Sauvignon from the warmer northern parts of the Valley, planted to auspicious red soils over limestone, is vinified alongside fruit from a cooler Eden Valley site, coalescing into a cornucopia of brambleberry and dulcetly perfumed blue fruit flavours. Only ever made in the most outstanding vintage years, barely more than a hundred dozen of Eurus were produced.
