A pure, flagship Cabernet Sauvignon from a mature single vineyard on Radford Road in the Seppeltsfield sub-district of the Barossa Valley. The Two Hands wineworks at Marananga was designed specifically for small batch production of the very best parcels of fruit. Very occasionally, the Two Hands isolate a block of vines that are earmarked to be handled separately, and vinified into a tremendous Barossa Cabernet. Length of palate and great persistence balanced by excellent depth is the hallmark to the subtle but complex Aphrodite.

After the crushing of grapes and completion of ferments, most red wines are filled to oak, it is here that the ageing barrels must be topped up from time to time, as a portion of the stocks evaporate into thin air. It's known in winemaking parlance as angel's share. A wine of great personality, personable and charismatic, the very best of McLaren Vale in every way, Angels Share articulates the more vivaciously ripe and upfront style of Aussie Shiraz.

Aerope is the Two Hands estate flagship, significantly a pure Grenache wine, representing the very finest old vines Barossa Grenache. Aerope is assembled annually from a chosen few of the most exceptional barrels, vinified from grapes that are hand picked off an eighty year old, dry grown vineyard on Radford Road, near the ancient Barossa winegrowing hamlet of Greenock.

Excellent Langtons Classification. It was at Turkey Flat, on the banks of Tanunda Creek whence bush turkeys once roamed, that pioneer Silesian settler Johann Friedrich August Fiedler planted the first Shiraz during the 1840s. The maturing vines on Section One, in the Hundred of Moorooroo, were bought in 1865 by Gottlieb Ernst Schulz, a successful butcher who established a thriving business among the vines. The Schulz family are still there and up to a fifth of the grapes in today's Turkey Flat Shiraz are picked off the gnarled old vines of 1847.

Turkey Flat are still the luminary, having taken charge of the great Aussie Rose revival. The winemaking team take the task of making Australia's best Rose very seriously, dedicating an entire vineyard to ensure the continuity of style. An auspicious cepage of Grenache and Shiraz, Dolcetto and Cabernet Sauvignon, slightly drier than most of her siblings, a princess in pink, displaying a complexity and balance that's very rare indeed, a winning style that's enjoyed around the nation by the most discerning Rose enthusiasts.

One of the first grape varietals planted in Australia, Mourvedre found a new home away from home in the warm and opportune climes of Barossa Valley. Established in the 1840s and in continuous ownership by the Schulz family since 1870, Turkey Flat at Tanunda was a habitat of wild Australian Bustards, a favourite bush food of locals and early settlers. Hand picked parcels of old to very old vines Mourvedre are treated to macerations on skins and warm temperature ferments, followed by a fill to French oak hogsheads and puncheons for twenty months maturation.

Encounters with pure Mataro wines are rare. Mataro thrives in the hot and dry conditions of summer, a very late comer in budbreak and ripening, Barossa is one of the few parts of Australia with a clime which allows a full and complete ripening of Mataro grapes. Barossa Valley can also be proud as the original Australian home of ancient Mataro vineyards, some of the oldest in the world, established by Lutheran pioneers during early settlement. Turkey Flat's vines were amongst the first ever planted in Barossa Valley.

The hundred year old Turkey Flat Grenache parcels yield harvests of the most amazing concentration. Rows of traditionally spur pruned vines, husbanded in the goblet style of Vallée du Rhône, produce around two tonnes per acre, translating into intensely flavoured vintages of remarkable eloquence. Aged in a judiciously toasted selection of seasoned and new French oaks barrels, the wine achieves astonishing balance between tannin and fruit, herbaceousness and spice, all due to determining the ideal day of harvest, selective hand picking and careful sorting of the berries.

Vinified from fruit grown to the historic, hundred and fifty year old Black Flat Block, an intensely varietal Cabernet Sauvignon, infused with the edifying eucalypt characters from thickets of old gums that grow along the creek bed. Planted to a cool, shaded shallow gully, the mixed alluvials and dark, fertile Biscay clays of Black Flat Block, yield a quality of Cabernet that's as eloquent as it is unique. Highly articulate with the characterful herbaceousness of an exquisite site, Turkey Flat offers the complexity and grace to match with caramelized foie gras or the finest wagyu.

Established in the 1840s and in continuous ownership by the Schulz family since 1870, Turkey Flat at Tanunda was a habitat of wild Australian Bustards, a favourite bush food of locals and early settlers. Younger parcels of Shiraz are selected for spice and lift, a fresher and more layered version of Barossa Valley, a component of whole bunches are added for structure and seasoned, sent to a selection of well seasoned, pre loved Turkey Flat casks, to encourage the vital fruit characters to sing.

The Turkey Flat vineyards are unique, in that the estate can trace their first plantings back to early settlement in the 1840s. The site was acquired by Gottlieb Ernst Schulz in 1865, a successful butcher who established a thriving business. His descendants are still there to this day, working amongst the vines. Butchers Block is fashioned to a crowd pleasing style, Mourvèdre provides the backbone, Shiraz adds flavour, Grenache brings rustic spice and dark morello fruit. Balance is essential, each grape plays a role, yet nothing competes for your attention.

Established 1847 by Johann August Frederick Fiedler, much of the credit for the finest Shiraz in the world is due to old vines such as Turkey Flat. Dry grown and gnarled, their roots extend metres into the soil in search of moisture. That they still exist is largely due to a far sighted quarantine scheme, as South Australia was spared the phylloxera outbreak which devastated vineyards around the world in the late 1800s. After five generations of stewardship by the Schulz family, a small parcel of fruit from the original 1847 vines is bottled as a superior vintage release.

The worthy vineyards along Stonewell Road at Marananga, have been source of the most memorable vintages in Barossa Cabernet. Tscharke established a smaller block of vine here in 2001, the quality of fruit however belies its teenage years. The auspicious plantings were sown east to west, aimed at protecting fruit from the parching late afternoon summer sun. The accumulated skills of six generations in Barossa viticulture, have sired a precious site which yields a multi dimensional Cabernet wine of amazing depth, structure and length.

No you're not seeing things, a Shiraz so nice, they named it thrice. An assemblage of fruit from the legacy of estate vineyards, planted to the oldest soils in Barossa Valley, very near the ancient hamlets of Stonewell, Gnadenfrei and Greenock Creek. A confluence of pastoral terroirs and more rugged terrains form a tapestry of unique mesoclimes, from which to fashion a velvet textured Shiraz wine with juicy fruit, crisp acidity and refined tannins.

Tscharke are a highly traditional, family hands on operation who have tilled their soils and husbanded vines for generations. A resurgence of interest for the arcane styles of the old world, inspired plantings of the more abstruse varietal grapes in the 1980s and 1990s. Crafted from parcels of Tempranillo clones D8V12 and Requiena, picked off two choice sites at Stonewell and Gnadenfrei in the western precincts of Barossa Valley, the Only Son offers a deliciously complex fruit filled wine with a measure of suave, food friendly savouryness.

A pure Touriga wine from the superlative Tscharke estate property at Gnadenfrei in Barossa Valley. The Nacional clone of Touriga vines were established 1985 to propitious weathered, quartzite rich, brown clay soils, they are now fully mature and yielding the most exemplary harvests. Damien Tscharke fashions his Touriga to a medium bodied style that drinks beautifully immediately upon release, ideally slightly, chilled alongside Mediterranean marinades and grills.

Montepulciano hails from Abruzzo on the Adriatic, it makes an immensely popular style, of food friendly savouryness and soft, light tannins. Tscharke source their Montepulciano from the first such site ever established in Australia. Montepulciano likes to vintage just a little later in the year, the longer growing season yields better balance and riper tannins in the fruit. An astonishingly good drink alongside all fine fare, its engagingly complex nose and judiciously drying palate conjures up recipes of bay leaf and game, fenneled sausages and braised, cured pork.

Two thirds Grenache, the balance in Mataro, picked off the Tscharke estate vineyards at Marananga. Preserving the integrity and retaining the eloquence of each variety is essential to the finished wine, both parts are encouraged to enunciate their uniqueness of character. A course of whole bunch ferments adds textural richness and introduces complexity, a separate term of age under seasoned oak permits the wines to mature and evolve as individuals. A seamless assemblage that's highly articulate of Barossa, as both parts express their personal charm.

Damien Tscharke was born and raised a sixth generation Barossa winemaker, he grew up amongst the vines at Seppeltsfield while attending Marananga Primary and Nuriootpa High. Gnadenfrei is the oldest vineyard within the Tscharke estate portfolio, established over seventy years ago by Damien Tscharke's grandfather, the terroir and clime yield an exceptional quality of Shiraz. A substantially structured, youthful Barossa style, driven by fruit and kept vital by rich, cherry filled acidity.

Tscharke are all about hand picking limited yields of the finest estate grown fruit, for the realization of outstanding, small batch Barossa wines. Following the traditions of several generations local viticulture in the ancient hamlet of Marananga, a precious parcel of Grenache at the pre eminent Gnadenfrei property is treated to the old world regimens of whole bunch ferment, foot stomping and seasoned French oak, achieving a richly complex Rhône style of dimensional fruit characters and the most exquisite balance.

Distinction is the jewel in the Tscharke crown, only ever made in the most exceptional vintage years, crafted from priceless parcels of Shiraz, hand picked off the elite Gnadenfrei property in the ancient Barossa hamlet of Marananga. The mesoclime here is fortuitous for Shiraz, an auspicious terroir of conglomerate pink quartzite and shallow red brown clays, the ideal environment for low yields of the most intensely flavoured fruit.

Damien Tscharke, proprietor, grower and winemaker is a sixth generation vigneron and Roseworthy baccalaureate who graduated with honours in viticulture. Girl Talk Savagnin is vinified from Albarino, an Iberian varietal that's native to the cool, windswept corner of northwest Portugal and Spain. Thick skinned, naturally acidic and an early ripening aromatic style, Damien Tscharke was convinced it would perform well at in the soils of Marananga. Girl Talk Albarino makes the perfect conversation starter, as well as being a deeply engaging food wine.

Graciano is well know in northen Spain and parts of southwest France, it makes a well perfumed wine with substantial tannins, superb balance and excellent ageing potential. An essential inclusion into many of the Navarra and Rioja blends, it can be capricious to grow and requires a dedicated vigneron to produce good harvests. Tscharke have been a part of Barossa viticulture since early settlement, they are people of the land with the skill and love of winegrowing that's required to achieve the most exquisite vintages of new world Graciano.

The Tscharke family have been a part of Barossa viticulture for six generations, they know all the other heritage growers well and can access some of the region's finest Shiraz. Choice parcels have been assembled for vinification into a full bodied style of palate weight and opulence, purposefully fashioned to drink early as a young wine. The trick is to isolate those harvests which have been picked on the perfect day of optimal ripeness. A solid Shiraz of juicy fruit flavours up front, supported by sound structure and affable Barossa charm.

The folks who make wine at Kellermeister wear boots and have purple hands. The winemaking here really is old world style, nothing is done by machine. Parcels of hand selected grapes from choice Barossa vineyards are fashioned into an exquisite Shiraz wine offering generous helpings of deliciously rich, sweet blackberry flavours and requiste Barossa dark chocolate characters, finishing long and fruit filled on a note of lingering spice. The Torzi Matthews team work to a formula that low yields translate into big, flavoursome wines. They selected a property in one of the most inhospitable parts of Eden Valley, where unending toil and frigid climes realize meagre amounts of parched berries each vintage. From grapes grown to the chilly surrounds of Mount McKenzie, incorporating the undried parcels of fruit earmarked for the estate flagship Frost Dodger, Mathews and Torzi craft an intense yet acessible construct of Eden Valley Shiraz to match bold Mediterrannean cuisine.

A partnership between Torzi and Matthews, they stumbled across a small, frost pocketed hollow on beautiful Mt McKenzie in Valley Eden. Torzi Matthews fell in love with the area for its remoteness and diverse thin soils. Attraction to the site was immediate, it was clear that this patch would produce low yields of Shiraz which could translate into the luscious style of dry racked Italian Appassimento wines. There were plenty of detractors and lots of unsolicited advice. The vines went in, frosts came and yields were low, Frost Dodger was born.

Before David Powell took on the task of raiding Barossa vineyards, he spent several years on the Scottish Highlands as a lumberjack in the Torbreck forest. Woodcutter Shiraz is a highly approachable introduction to the Torbreck range, featuring fruit from some of the up and coming vineyards, rather than the battle hardened old warriors which make up the heart and soul of the Torbreck winelist. This is the kind of red the winemaker himself liked to drink with a hearty meal after a hard day's work in the wood, but you don't have to be a woodcutter to enjoy it.

Fashioned with the savoury, food friendly dry whites of southern France in mind, Woodcutter Semillon is the ideal tonic after a long day in the vineyard. The copper hued skins of the characterful and ancient Madeira clone of Semillon, fleshes out the palate markedly, infusing the complexity of pineapples and almond kernel, roasted cashew and ripe white peach. A match to creamy French style curries, yabbles and frog legs almondine or grilled fishes on fragrant rice.

Rhône Valley grapes seem to flourish in the Barossa, enthused by sunny Mediterranean climes and stimulated by the cooling breezes off Gulf St Vincent. Torbreck retain access to the finest parcels of white Rhône varietals in the entire Valley. Woodcutter is fashioned to be dominated by a larger component of Roussanne, which provides the structure and length, Marsanne adds complexity, texture and palate richness. Viognier contributes pure, floral lift, finishing the wine with a measure of refinement and mark of elegance.

David Powell planted Viognier in 1994, with a view to emulating the great growths of Condrieu. Powell is enamoured of the beguiling Viognier, an essential component of his Shiraz flagships, it offers remarkable eloquence and great distinction when grown and crafted without compromise into a pure varietal wine. Only ever made in the finest vintage years and immediately recognizable as an exceptional wine, the white of choice to accompany Sauce au beurre blanc sur les poissons ou quenelles, garnitures à la financière ou quelque chose au pâte feuilletée.

Torbreck are strongly influenced by the long enduring, classic French styles of wine. The wild, rugged and earthen aromas associated with France's Bandol provide the basis for The Pict, a powerful single vineyard, pure Mataro wine. Sourced exclusively from a plot of ancient vines near the hamlet of Greenock, the palate is elegantly rich, earthy and beautifully balanced for early drinking, a profound expression of Mataro, untamed and wild, almost certainly enough to satiate a Pictish warrior.

Roussanne is a deeply coloured grape that's native to native Valley Rhône, employed as a blender into both red and white wines, it introduces fragrant stonefruit and nutty nectarine characters. The Loon is a unique and stylish rendering of Shiraz, as beguiling as it is intense, characterised by its beautifully lifted fruit characters and exquisite balance, made boisterous through the inclusion and co fermentation of Roussanne skins. The Loon matches well with goat, game meats or lamb, a splendid accompaniement to mushroom, provolone or truffle recipes.

Torbreck believe that they source fruit for The Laird from the greatest vineyard on earth, owned by the Seppelt family, it commands a price for its harvest that's commensurate with the most prestigious first growths of the old world. There have only ever been four vintage releases, such is the strict criterion for quality. Two precious hectares of Shiraz named Gnadenfrei, yield a crop of small, concentrated berries, the envy of all growers and winemakers in Barossa Valley, only the most exceptional years are worthy of The Laird.

A pure, single vineyard wine, from fruit picked off a single plot of Shiraz, planted 1960 and still managed by the same family. The rocky surrounds of Greg and Cynthia Knight’s highly elevated block of vine were so very reminiscent to winemaker David Powell of stone burial grounds on the hills above Torbreck forest. Nestled into the eastern slope of Mt. McKenzie, this cherished site yields a harvest of parched, intensely flavoured berries, brimming with extraordinary character, lined with the most graceful tannins, endowed with remarkable balance, elegance and poise.

In the early 1980s, due to lack of demand, the government paid incentives to growers to rip out their vines and gut some of Australia's most precious old vineyards. The movement to cool climate viticulture made the Barossa, of all places, look rather irrelevant. The Factor is Torbreck's salutation to those dedicated growers who stood by their vines and continue to painstakingly produce small harvests of the most splendid Shiraz. A wine of immense concentration and great purity of fruit that only the most meticulous husbanding of vines can achieve.

On a highland trail, the place to stop and rest when weary is known as a Bothie. Torbreck have been tinkering away at a sweet wine since 2001, the idea was always to construct something that's just a little bit different. This sweeter style of Frontignac exhibits lifted fruit aromatics, lifted perfumes of rosewater and honeydew melon, geraniums and lime, very characteristic of it's Barossa provenance. Bothie is a very versatile wine that can be enjoyed either at the start of a meal or nicely chilled at the end, alongside fresh fruits and cheese, ice creams or sorbet.

The view from Struie down towards Dornoch Firth, is as inspiring as the panorama across Barossa's Valley floor from atop the elevated ranges. David Powell assembles Shiraz from ancient, isolated little Barossa vineyards, some are well over a century of age. Sourced from several elevated sites throughout the Barossa and Eden Valleys, Struie reflects the cooler side of the region and showcases the subtle nuances which can be gained from hillside viticulture, for a full bodied and powerful, rich red wine of purity, focus and intensity.

Inspired by the lusciously rich, mineral scented dry whites of La Vallée Rhône, Torbreck have assembled the essential cépage of Marsanne, Viognier and Roussanne, sourced entirely from the distinguished Descendant Vineyard at Roennfeldt Road in Marananga. Five rows each of superior vine, set aside every year for the construct of full bodied whites to rival the classics of the old world. A seamless experience in silken texture, to accompany anything seafood, west coast marron or moreton bay bug, brewed mussels or deftly prepared abalone.

On a highland farm, the array of barns, stables and outbuildings is known as a steading. Steading GSM has long been David Powell's favourite wine within the Torbreck stable because of the old, gnarled bush vines that produce its core. Grenache, Mataro and Shiraz grown to ancient sites at Moppa and Marananga, Seppeltsfield and Ebenezer, Gomersal and Greenock, perform brilliantly in their own right. When assembled however, their strengths coalesce into a wine of remarkable structure and bucolic grace.
