John Riddoch brewed up Coonawarra's second vintage in 1896 under a woolshed which now ages barrels of Katnook Cabernet. The original Coonawarra Fruit Colony itself was headquartered in a limestone building which now serves as cellar door. Vines have been trained over the course of decades to extract maximum flavour from the long slow Coonawarra ripening, achieving harvests of Cabernet with ripe generous flavours and fine lingering tannins.

A redolent Shiraz wine with an abundance of soft tannins that's drinking beautifully. The major component is from the estate's McLaren Flat vineyards. The second instalment is sourced from good sites at Blewitt Springs and Seaview, with a smaller portion of early ripening, low yield fruit originating from a vineyard in the Sellicks sub region which is very close to the sea. They all combine beautifully to form a wine which offers rich aromas of spicy mulberry conserve followed by a smooth mix of black and red berry fruits on the middle and back palate.

A component of Shiraz and a dash of Viognier contribute wonderful complexity. Clarry was the fourth generation to tend vines on the family farm, established by his great grandparents who migrated from Prussia aboard the Prince George in 1838. Many years were spent by Clarry pruning, hand picking and nurturing the Kalleske vineyards.
