Seppelt Rutherglen is made from the Brown Muscat grape, harvested at peak ripeness and fortified to give an aromatic spirit lift. In 1859 William Salter and his son Edward founded the firm W. Salter & Son, which has since evolved into the baronial Saltram label. To celebrate 150 years of winemaking, an extremely limited amount of very rare old tawny from the 1959 vintage has been released. Only 1859 bottles were made to coincide with Saltram's founding year. This eternal wine is drawn from a single growing season, but unlike most vintage fortifieds which have been aged in bottle, Saltram Vintage Rare Tawny has been kept in oak barrels for fifty years to achieve its peerless style.

Quinta do Vesuvio is the most magnificent estate of all Douro Valley. Located in the beautiful and austere Upper Douro, its history dates back to the 16th century. The Symington family, owners operators of the prestigious Warres, Cockburn and Dow brands, acquired Quinta do Vesuvio in 1989, re planting and expanding the vineyards to over a hundred forty hectares. The property is fundamentally north facing, with seven hills, seven valleys and altitudes from 130 to 530 metres. Visitors to the historic Vesuvio granite lagares, during the time of treading at vintage, are always impressed by the extraordinary floral fragrances of the fermenting musts. Located in the illustrious arid flatlands of Douro Superior, Quinta do Vesuvio is a legendary property, identified as far back as the 16th Century. In the 19th Century under Dona Antonia Ferreira, the wines of Vesuvio wines gained a peerless reputation for quality and excellence. The only style made from this Quinta is Vintage Port, only in years that meet the most stringent quality requirements. Vintage 1994 was assembled in the spring of 1996, fewer than 3,000 cases were released, bottled exclusively at the Quinta.

Port was the Duke of Wellington's favourite tipple. He indulged in a glass or two each night before retiring, including the evening before famous battles. Many of Wellington's officers were from the Oporto family of Port producers, they fought alongside Wellington at almost every engagement against Napoleon during the Peninsular war. Their descendants are still in the industry, the Symingtons now operate the most prestigious marques in Vintage Port. Made with hand picked grapes from sixty year old Grenache vines, this specially selected fortified wine was matured in small oak barriques at Pirramimma Estate. The 2002 vintage has produced an exceptionally fine wine, rich and full bodied, with underlying fresh fruit flavours. There are rich rancio characters and a smooth, immensely satisfyingly palate. A luscious desert wine exhibiting cherries and spices on the nose, complex mouth filling flavours and a long-lasting finish. For generations Pirramimma have been producing Tawny Ports of immense character and flavour, the Old Digby is a distinguished, thick rich wine artfully crafted from unique Grenache and Shiraz vines grown around the ancient Pirramimma vineyards. Following in the tradition of great Australian aged Tawny Ports, this luscious wine is named after Digby Johnston, responsible for making some of the memorable Pirramimma Ports of the 1950s and 60s. Pirramimma has produced this luscious style of Port for many generations, the youngest component is at least twelve years old. Assembled from stocks of Grenache, Shiraz and Pedro of various vintages, which have been matured in small old oak barrels and fortified with brandy spirit, to construct a rich and complex fortified wine.

For Peter Seppelt Wines, traditions continue. The Seppelt family has been making wine since the middle of the 19th century, present day Peter Seppelt is the fifth generation to preserve the heritage. In more recent times, Karl, Lotte and Peter came across 120 hectares of splendid winegrowing terroir in the Barossa. That was twenty five years ago, the vines have fully matured and it has come to be known as Grand Cru Estate. A very dry fortified aperitif wine with a developed intense aged yeast character, a long lasting finish.

Every now and then, Peter Lehmann releases a rare jewel from deep within the cellar. The King is a superb fortified wine of great distinction which has laid undisturbed in the bottle for many years under the Peter Lehmann Tanunda Cellars. Twelve years old upon release, The King is showing the benefits of extended bottle age. A rich and mature cepage of Shiraz with Touriga Nacional, grown to good Barossa vineyards, the King must be decanted carefully, as a vintage Port of this distinction will show some sediment and crust. Christopher Rawson Penfold planted vines on the slopes of Magill, very shortly after colonization in the year 1844. Today, the historic bluestone cellars are home to the new world's longest and most distinguished tradition in fortified wine. A highly special blend of the finest and oldest components of Grandfather Tawny are assembled from time to time. While articulating itself as being of a very great age on the palate, Great Grandfather offers an incredible intensity of flavour. Noilly Prat is the classic French aperitif, an essential for every cocktail enthusiast, and a natural work of art. The marque was born when Louis Noilly joined forces with Claudius Prat to establish Noilly Prat & Cie in 1855. Masterfully handcrafted at Marseillan for over two centuries to a unique, natural process. The technique replicates the production of the rich, fuller flavoured wines created centuries ago, when stocks were transported in barrel on the decks of ships, exposed to the natural elements for many months at a time.

The fifth generation of the Morris family continue to make the most memorable Rutherglen Tawny wines. The estate's history with fortifieds dates back to 1913, when John James McWilliam planted the first ever vines at Hanwood on the Riverina. An immensely satisfying effort, this fine aged Oloroso is a blend of luscious fortified wines across several vintages at an average five years of age. The fortification takes place gradually, by the addition of no more than two per cent of a high quality neutral spirit at any one time, permitting winemakers to arrest vinification at precisely the desired level of sweetness. A delight to sip at any time of day, elegant and long, just a touch spicy, the dance of fruit flavours and Flor notes make Hanwood the perfect chilled aperitif or accompaniement to rich foods.

Crafted in the old world way, according to the traditional flor solera system. Wines are secondarily fermented under unique Flor caps, yeasts which grow on top of the Apera, releasing aldehydes and infusing the Sherry with lifted, nutty characters. Clean and mellow, gracefully dry and pleasingly rancio, exquisite with a warm alcohol length of aromatic malt flavours and integrated aged oak. Crafted from parcels of Mataro, Grenache and Shiraz, blended to an average age of five years. Harvest is generally later in the season, off choice vineyards in sunny Riverina, the added term on vine serving to fully ripen grapes and encourage luscious fruit sweetness. A lighter, fresher style of Tawny than McWilliam's Hanwood Ten Year Old, offering exquisite richness and complexity without overt oak.

A patiently matured, multi vineyard Muscat, vinified from Red Frontignac grapes and blended to an average age of five years. The fruit, picked extremely ripe to maintain the sweetness of the style, is sourced entirely from McWilliam's vineyards in the Riverina wine region of New South Wales. The warm and dry conditions are ideal for Fortifieds, enabling grapes to ripen superbly and to achieve great richness of flavour. Fermentation is arrested at the desired sweetness by the gradual addition of a high quality neutral Spirit, also made at the Hanwood wineworks.
